It is 37 years today (Tuesday) since Sitiveni Rabuka carried out the first of his two coups to assert indigenous supremacy in Fiji, triggering an exodus of tens of thousands of the nation’s best and brightest people.
He has also condoned the use of the word “vulagi” among iTaukei to refer to the nation’s minorities – condemning them to be visitors in their own country sometimes four or five generations since their ancestors set foot in Fiji.
Nearly four decades on, he has triggered another exodus as Fiji’s minorities wake up to the fact that Rabuka betrayed them before the last election when he said that what he had done in 1987 was wrong, apologised and said he had learnt his lesson. He tricked them into voting for him or his Coalition partner, the NFP, only to embark on a renewed wave of overt racism, including workplace ethnic cleansing in the civil service and offices of state.
We know that more than 80,000 people have fled Fiji since the Coalition came to power 17 months ago, most recently 15,000 in one month alone. Suddenly it has dawned on the “Snake” of 1987 and his racist colleagues that triggering this exodus is having a grave impact on the economy as the nation’s tax base is eroded. He realises belatedly that ordinary iTaukei, along with other citizens, are going to suffer because the government is losing the ability to keep them on the public drip.
What does he do? He has the gall to invite the descendants of the Girmit who’ve fled to return to Fiji and on Girmit Day – which has been brought forward a day from its proper date of May 14 so that it doesn’t coincide with the anniversary of the Snake’s first coup. (May 14 1987).
Fat chance, you slimy creep. Having trusted you once in 2022 that your promise of having learnt your lesson about the folly of the racism of 1987 was sincere and having been betrayed, no-one in their right mind is ever going to trust you again. What are people coming back to? Not equal opportunity for all but minorities as second class citizens and a standard of governance that has gone through the floor.
The cynicism of this “offer” is breathtaking. No, make that vomit-inducing. Because for its shameless temerity and total absence of self awareness and sensitivity, tens of thousands of Sitiveni Rabuka’s victims over nearly four decades suddenly want to throw up.

Rabuka has hurt Indians so much in past and now he is asking them to come back. Because of him many Indian farmers have become landless and now living as squatters. He is a snake who cannot be trusted. A ethno-nationalist and a racisit who is hell bent in making Fiji for i-taukeis only. The recent civil appointments tell the whole story. It is only because of Bainimarama people got equal citizenship. Rabuka also condones work of his ethno-nationalist ministers like one Turaga. I urge all my Fiji Indians to migrate which ever country you can as there is no future for Indians in Fijians.
Instead of calling back those who have already left and are way better off now. No longer vulagis in thier new found countries but equal citizens, Rabuka should probably try and salvage what is left of Fiji as a sinking ship.
Forget trying to retain indians in Fiji, thousands of educated Itaukei are fleeing the racist culture of Fiji. I met a couple in Australia, Itaukei said they’ll never contemplate going back to Fiji under Rabuka.
Soon all that will be remaining is a few self declared accidental leaders called chiefs, lots of uneducated, ridden with poverty brainwashed subjects and a handful of racist enablers called coalition who will loot fiji while they can.
If Fijians want evidence, just pick a random Itaukei politician, high chief, CEO etc. See where their children or grandchildren are studying…i bet its not at some rural district school. Its at an elite urban school, or better still in Australia or New Zealand.

Shades of 1970s Uganda? In 1972, President Idi Amin, self confessed human flesh eating cannibal, declared Uganda a Republic and expelled Asians who were accepted with open arms into Britain. Sounds familiar? Butadroka from, where else but Tailevu, tried this in Fiji with marches in Suva but was quickly put back in his box by the Mara Government.
Uganda fell into anarchy and tribal warfare, so much so that Uganda then reversed that decision in the 80s sending delegations to the UK begging the Asians to return to fire up the struggling economy. A few did like Sudhir Rupalia who returned with USD 25,000 and is today the head of a huge business empire and Uganda’s only billionaire. As for Uganda, crime ridden, corrupt politicians, poverty, coups, etc etc.

Well as I said a few weeks ago it was WAY time for an “update” so I think getting rid of it he old stache and shaving is fresh BUT he must change his ethical standards to go with it otherwise just another dictator doing what he wants to keep his position.
The Stache was an indication of how he has been so stuck in the past since 1987 and proved he had had the same morals all this time. If he wants to be a better man and move this country forward then he has to show acts of integrity, ethics, honesty and transparency and denounce racism.
Failure to sack Rodrodo and Tabuya was very telling of his willingness to cheat a system for personal gain. Otherwise explain how they are the best for the job. Is there anyone with an actual educational background that qualifies that could replace Rodrodo for example?
Why not allow some overseas to apply for positions before they uproot their lives and trust again to return.
Let’s see some anti discrimination policies in place in the workplace. All people hired based on merit. He needs to a full inspection on anyone put in govt jobs due their race and then fire and replace with more deserving candidates.
At least review their ability to do their job. Let’s call for a review of the positions where we can clearly see they were not qualified.

Most Indians if not all that left in 1987 and the years after that are millionaires. Those leaving now will follow the same road…build a new and prosperous life in their new found country.
Fiji and its PM will keep chasing our best people away and when everything seems to be collapsing and no hope is on sight, out comes the apologies and the begging bowl.

Rabuka knows from previous experience that without the despised “Vulagis”, Fiji will come to a grinding halt. Who will do the work and create wealth?
But while many former Fijians of Indian ethnicity have strong emotional ties to the land of their birth (and the land of their parent’s and grandparent’s birth) they will not come back permanently. They and their children have flourished in their new countries. Those countries gain and our loss.

There is plenty to explore. Our affinity and love of our birth places will forever be with us. There are also provisions for children born abroad to (former) Fiji citizens/dual nationals to (re)gain citizenship-spouse, children, grand children. Of course as always, the indigenous former Fiji citizens/people will have a different, more expeditious path to regaining Fijian citizenship—because then are in the bola ni kawa bula. The vulagi have their own registry called the vola ni kawa kanikani!!! Hahaha!

Grubsheet, make sure you do the same write up on Bainimarama’s 2 coups. The 1st in 2000 when he removed Rt Mara as President and with that prevented Chaudry from retaking the PM’s post. Poor Speight was a sacrificial lamb to create a turmoil to give him a reason to come in.
