An extraordinary drama is being played out at the end of the Pacific Islands Forum summit in Tonga as China demands that the PIF leaders remove all reference to Taiwan in the final communique despite the fact that one has been there in every communique for the past three decades. The Chinese Special Envoy to the Pacific and former Ambassador to Fiji, Qian Bo, threw a tantrum in full view of the visiting media and has succeeded, for the time being, in forcing the communique to be removed from the Forum website.
Astonishingly at the same time, the current Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhao Jian, has told the local media in Fiji that China isn’t interested in geopolitical considerations and wants to help the region without getting anything in return. Not interested in geopolitics? Who the hell are these “commie bastards” * trying to fool?
Just as Beijing’s Ambassador to Fiji is making soothing noises in the local media in Suva, his boss is throwing a monumental hissy-fit and telling Pacific nations who they can have relationships with just 746 kilometres away in Nuku’olofa.
How is this all going to play out? Well, it is a huge test of the Pacific leaders and their integrity and resolve. Are they going to kowtow to the Bullies of Beijing or are they going to insist on their sovereignty being maintained and their right to choose who their friends are?
If they cave in, we are all going to come to a frightening realisation. That while China pretends to be a benign presence in the Pacific and a provider of assistance without strings, that is totally conditional on Pacific countries like Fiji toeing the line. As far as the Chinese are concerned, we will do what they tell us to do.
We are all gradually being lured into the Chinese honey trap with money and false assurances that they are merely here to help . But only the most foolish Pacific Islander can possibly believe the unelected gangsters of the Chinese Communist Party when they claim that they don’t want to lord it over us. They are already doing so and what was unfolding in Nuku’olofa last night is conclusive proof.

Now that the PM is back in the country after his 10 day poverty alleviation tour of China, the iTaukei will now be brought out of poverty. Our PM is such a switched on person. He is fit, goes to the gym, loves his wife. He is not like those chiefs who went to China almost a year ago and that delegation from Rewa a few weeks ago. Our PM is action man and I am sure we will be seeing the iTaukei driving SUVs in no time and enjoying the fruits of their land, as they are entitled to.

I have only heard amazing things about your country Taiwan and I would love to visit.
I have been to a China many times and have no desire ever to go back. I would never go as a tourist. I felt an eerie feeling I cannot explain. They had made a big effort to be hospitable to me but everything seemed like a facade to make you see how great it was. But as people there were required to tell me how beautiful it is, “isn’t it so beautiful”, in the distance you could see huge factories billowing with dark grey smoke. It felt dystopian and otherworldly. Although it has grown a lot, from the poor rural villages I saw, I’m not interested in high rises and concrete cities. What makes me happy is serene pure nature as we have in the islands in Fiji. My heart breaks thinking about them destroying places like Savu Savu. I do not think they can offer Fiji anything. Why would we risk letting anyone touch it. I loathe the tacky architecture in China and everything about it. The roads the built are falling apart and unsafe. Why do we need them for roads, roads? They don’t have a Vested interest in our safety. Why can’t we build our own roads?
I am not here in my life to have name brand purses and name brand clothing. That’s why I love Fiji. Where nobody cares what kind of purse I have or what kind of car I drive. I’m more interested in living off my land and living an honest simple life and preserve nature all around.
