Like a QVS schoolboy receiving a prize from the headmaster, Sitiveni Rabuka grasps the hand of the Chinese dictator in a manner that indicates deep respect and subservience. It says everything about the Coalition’s kowtowing to China at the same time as it takes hundreds of millions of dollars from Australia to meet its budget shortfalls and fix vital infrastructure like the CWM Hospital.
This photo doesn’t come from the Fijian government. In fact, as of this morning, there was nothing on the government Facebook page about the Prime Minister’s meeting with Xi Jinping. The photo on the FBC website is from the Chinese government, which pretty much sums up the servile nature of the relationship.
We know practically nothing about what Sitiveni Rabuka did in China, except for visiting a fish farm and having a succession of meetings with Chinese official at various levels. So what was discussed? Who knows? The Fijian media has largely ignored the visit. Anywhere else in the world, a leader visiting China would be accompanied by a team of media representatives but not Fiji. We only know what happens with the occasional drip-feed and in this instance, what the Chinese dictatorship tells us.
Even then, there are some serious questions to answer about the Chinese account of Rabuka’s visit and what Xi Jinping told him:
“A China-Fiji community with a shared future in a world of turmoil and chaos”? What is the nature of that “community” and “shared future? And “a world of turmoil and chaos”? It is China that is causing turmoil and chaos through its illegal occupation of contested territory in the South China Sea and its belligerence towards the democracy of Taiwan. And on the question of Taiwan, this is what Rabuka is quoted as having said:
“Fully understands China’s position on Taiwan?” That it is for China to do with what it pleases, including Fiji acquiescing to Xi Jinping’s threat to invade Taiwan at a timetable of its own choosing? With whose authority does Rabuka give such an assurance? It certainly isn’t with a mandate from the Fijian people to side with the unelected bully boys of Beijing against a peaceful democracy.
The Prime Minister also shows himself to be as hopelessly naive as any QVS junior schoolboy in his assessment of the global position. The following statement is breathtaking in its total lack of knowledge about the gravity of the current international situation.
WTF? This kind of around-the-grog-bowl analysis wouldn’t pass muster at a third rate university let alone from the leader of supposedly the South Pacific’s most influential island nation. It is frankly pathetic and an indication of the almost total absence of proper analytical skills at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
No wonder Xi Jinping is smiling so indulgently at the gormless “leader” in front of him. Reeled in hook, line and sinker into the Chinese lair and utterly seduced by the propaganda of a group of unelected gangsters who lord it over their own people and pose a clear and present danger to global peace and security.
Who kowtows to China more? You decide, Fiji.
Heathcliffe says
I disagree with your comments on China Graham. China is not the UK or USA. She did not enslave people to build her wealth like the British did. Nor use the CIA and the gun and arms trade like the USA does to keep countries impoverished.
Its funny how we here in Australia are allowing the USA to use our bases in the North and Darwin to let the USA use our country as a possible battleground if the USA attacks China.
Not even a pip squeak from you about this Graham. Especially after the debacle in in Vietnam where we Aussies lost troops.
Your white anglo colonial mindset has not evolved yet on this subject Graham. So who is kow-towing to whom?
Graham Davis says
My “white anglo-colonial mindset’? What about your “coolie” chip on the shoulder anti-white mindset?
The UK and the US (plus India, incidentally) are democracies that frequently change their governments. China is a dictatorship in which the Chinese Communist Party tells everyone what to do and if they don’t, they are incarcerated or worse.
It is unbelievable that you would be stupid enough to argue that China doesn’t enslave its people. It is the BIG LIE that useful idiots like you have fallen for. Just ask the Tibetans or Uighurs or anyone else who crosses the Chinese dictatorship. Or the people of Taiwan whose democracy is threatened by these unelected gangsters.
You decide what you want, Commie Coolie Boy. (I am sick of being identified by the colour of my own skin so it’s payback time)
You live in Australia as an equal citizen in a democracy. And yet you spit on our values and especially our collective right to choose who governs us. If you were living in China and said about the CCP what you have said about a nation that welcomes you with open arms, do you honestly think you would remain unmolested?
F**kwit.
Idiots everywhere says
Good response GD. I think Heathcliffe is a prejuiced iTaukei arselicker who was oblivious. But now he is aware about what China does to its citizens. It is what the iTaukei want to do to Indians in Fiji. So there is a connection there on his sympathies.
Heathcliffe says
By your logic, it means people like Prime Minister Paul Keating are fwitts too. Try reading Malcolm Fraser’s Dangerous Allies and see if you can broaden your horizons Graham.
And yes, I do have every equal right to question who governs us. I am Australian and I want our armed forces to defend Australia.
What China does is their business.
Apologies for the white colonial tag. Did not mean to cause personal offence.
Graham Davis says
So do you think the Chinese people have a right to decide who governs them? Only the people of Taiwan have that right. The rest of China is under the communist boot. What China does is the business of the entire democratic world. Because we will not tolerate them subjugating any democracy and they need to understand that it will mean war.
Heathcliffe says
I agree that deterence is an important tool for lasting peace but so too is Australian sovereignty. China will annexe Taiwan peacefully and since both the USA and Oz adhere to the two China’s policy, I do not see China acquiring Taiwan a problem.
But again, it’s their business. The USA tried to bring democracy to Vietnam with disaster. It has wrecked the middle East.
I side with Gareth Evans, Paul Keating, Malcolm Fraser, and a multitude of like minded people about our need to conduct a foreign policy that is independent.
Instead of lecturing Fiji about kow towing, we Australians should stop this practice first towards USA.
Graham Davis says
If you think China is going to move into Taiwan uncontested, I repeat my original comment. F**kwit.
Chief beggar says
Well, Rambo is a chief beggar from Fiji and it shows in this pic. He is waiting for the Chinese and Chinese President to take the iTaukei out of poverty. The Chinese will send him back home today with a whole heap of presents. But I doubt it will be of the scale and extent of that received from Australia.
The Aussies must be shitting themselves because this dick jetted off to China with his begging bowl only a few days after the Aussies gave him $86m in direct budget support and another $14m to fix CWM. Wonder if he told the Aussies he was going to China.
As for getting the iTaukei out of poverty, no amount of hand holding, no amount of money and no amount of praying and fasting will get them out of poverty. It is a lost cause because that is the way they want it. No poverty alleviation programs will work in Fiji. Fiji is unique as we all know and as all Fijians know.
Graham Davis says
The actual value of Australian assistance to Fiji in recent years is more than half a billion dollars.
Guru Singh says
Australian government must realise that no amount of money flowing in from the sweat and blood of the Australian tax payer to the Soli bowls of Fiji will ever stop Fiji from passing the Soli bowls around and China will extract maximum value when the time comes
Sad Observer Scared for Fiji says
The lack of integrity combined with naivety about what happens when you accept gifts from many amongst competing global agendas surely won’t lift Fiji out of poverty, least of all the iTaukei. Only the iTaukei can lift themselves out of poverty by deep naval gazing about their work ethic and hands out mentality, and such deep naval gazing would also require adapting some ideas from western culture which they struggle with, particularly with the insular and corrupt leaders they currently follow. So far the “old Fijian ways” are seeing escalating price gouging of tourists that may give short term gratification, but medium or long term will strangle an industry upon Fiji relies.
Prem says
VULAGI
God forbid Fiji is not struck by any natural disasters with the Cyclone season not far away. I wonder what will China will do to compete with Australia, NZ, US and Britain to assist Fiji to be in their good books.
Anonymous says
Ah yes, I think we all know who GD likes his Fijians to be deferent towards. Isa vinaka saka vinaka na veivuke
Graham Davis says
I want Fiji to be on the side of the democracies, not kowtow to belligerent dictators. And I make no apology for it. Because history tells us that when you suck up to dictators, it isn’t long before they are telling you what to do.
Nick says
Begging for aid and loan from China
Entitled and prejudiced says
These God-fearing iTaukei are ecstatic and exuberant that they now have freedom of speech and freedom from fear and say they are a true democracy now. But when it comes to Indians living the the country for generations they suddenly apply other standards – that Indians are not equal, they want apartheid, Indians should know their place, that they should not be free, their progress showed by stymied, they do not belong. Their call for democracy and freedom suddenly become selective. And then they go to church! Entitled, prejudiced, pretend Christians. That is what the Boers in South Africa were and that is what the Ku Klux Klan in the US are. But the iTaukei, well, they are so special.
You will remian in poverty if you are spiteful, full of hate and envious and have a mindset that keeps you that way.
Perplexed says
No other country has brought nearly one billion people out of poverty and converted them into the middle class like the Chinese did.
U can’t be serious when u imply that Fiji has nothing to learn from the leading economy in the world today?
Graham Davis says
Yes, brought them out of poverty without a vote and no means of removing them. Is that what you want for Fiji?
Sword into Plough Shares says
America is illegally occupying oil fields in Syria and were recently ousted from an illegal occupation of Afghanistan, former Australian PM, Paul Keating last week hit out at the Albanese Govt’s deal with the Americans to place military bases all around Australia. Keating went on to describe Australia under the AUKUS deal as the 52nd state of America.
Under the leadership of former RFMF officers in politics like Bainimarama, Pio Tikoduadua and even with Rabuka as PM , the Fiji govt on behalf of, but without the consent of the people of Fiji, entered into military partnership agreements with the militaries of Australia, New Zealand and the United States.
Ignoring a warning by former Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser who described the US as a “dangerous ally,” Fiji is blindly being led into war with China.
It’s no secret that America has been provoking China into war over Taiwan.
The agreements now in place means Fiji soldiers and naval assets will be used on the side of these western democracies when war finally does break out with China.
But there is hope. Rabuka’s meeting with the Chinese Premier is an opportunity for the two leaders to get to know each other so that in the event of war breaking out at least Rabuka can pick up the fone and speak directly to Xi Xi Ping to assure him of Fiji’s neutrality in the conflict.
Graham Davis says
There will be no “neutrality”, of that you can be sure.
The Oracle says
On China Rabuka shows he likes to run with the hares while hunting with the hounds.
Interesting that the announced $7bn for fixing Fiji’s aging water and sewage infrastructure plus $4bn to make Fiji 100% self sufficient in renewable energy were not on PM Rabuka’s priority list for talks on his current visit to China.
Instead, the following were identified after Rabuka’s meeting with the Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, Li Qiang China — support for “Fiji’s comprehensive infrastructure development that will focus on poverty alleviation, land and maritime connectivity under the Belt and Road Initiative.”
This is in addition China’s and the Rabuka Govt’s agreement for China to upgrade 82 kilometers of Vanua Levu roads.
A unique feature of China ‘s Belt and Road Initiative are swap arrangements between China and a host country. China today has swap deals with 89 different countries. So the question is what did Rabuka offer the Chinese in return for their pledge to improve Vanua Levi’s Roads and bridges?
Coincidentally, within days of the Vanua Levu BRI Plan being announced, Filimoni Vosarogo’s Mineral Resources Division published in the papers an application from a Chinese firm for a prospecting licence for an area about a third of Western Viti Levu from Denarau Island, Nadi to the mountains and Valleys of the Highlands of Ba and Navosa.
The question is what is the Rabuka Governnent’s plans for attracting the the 11-billion dollars needed for upgrading Fiji’s water and sewage plants plus 100% self sufficiency in renewable energy projects, both potentially highly profitable. The worry is the Govt plans to give the project out under a private-public partnership. Everything is pointing that way as the Water and Sewage Plan and costings were released at a British High Commission event in Suva attended by other donors and representatives of engineering firms.
The UK has had a terrible record of privatisation: it privatized its water system to the corporation Thames Water, which paid big dividends to its wealthy shareholders while dumping 72 billion liters of sewage into the water.
Now the Water Corporation going bankrupt and will have to be bailed out by… the government
Thames Water has £15.6 billion of debt, which it can’t pay. It defaulted in April
But in June, it paid £150 million in dividends to wealthy shareholders
So it seems Rabuka likes to run with the hares while hunting with the hounds: he talks small poverty alleviation projects with the Chinese but leaves the big paying projects for the big boys from western democracies.
There are many other solutions without having to sell the nation’s Crown Jewels. Countries such as the US, Germany, France, India and even China funded their infrastructure needs through other means that made them advanced countries today,
Get Up Fiji says
Just to be clear; Heathcliffe is one of two identities, either a CCP implant, or a genuine Aussie idiot who has no blinking idea about what the CCP is all about. In fact I just thought of a 3rd possibility; an AI contributor. Because no one in their right frame of mind would talk up and heap praise on the CCP up like Heathcliffe has done. Great job GD in calling this stupidity and ignorance out!!
Ian Simpson says
I have only one identity, truth, and the search of truth, and to accept truth as it shows itself.
China is achieving the greatest advances in HUMAN HISTORY!!! , ( Advances – open to philosophical questions) judged in the same vein as what the West considers advances
It has only been possible because they have a one party system that can plan 10, 30, 50, 100 years ahead.
It has marshalled the greatest force on earth, the sovereign right to create credit by owning it and directing it by a people who are intelligent, resourceful and pragmatic, as nearly all Asian countries are.
They have educated their people to mind boggling degree, 5 million engineers alone, per year,- 50 million 10 years, 100 million 20 years. Engineers, scientist, educators , entrepreneurs, backed by planners, without financial constraint, as their USD reserves allow fractionalization to the hooha, that is $4T to $40T as an example.
Where as the West, having the same tools, destroyed their own industrial base . All they have left is an arms industry, and even that is a mighty limp d*ck. There are a couple of little stars about trying to stay alight.
China and Russia have gold backed currencies, take that to the bank.
China is the largest economy and the most populace and educated country in the world. In my opinion, its educated populace makes its rating as an economy streets ahead of USA Inc., for me, brains beats dollars in any economy.
As for politics.
China has a one party State. Leaders of 10,100, 1000, 10,000. 100,000. A saturation of democracy. Biblical in scope. Priorities are determined by the people, after the experts ( engineers, planners, etc, etc, have analysed every situation) have tabled their results and opinions. The administration, civil servants are left to implement. Is it perfect?, NO, but what would you expect when you economy is doubling every 10-12 years. Every doubling includes all the previous increase, it is beyond mind boggling. I visited China and have witnessed it. The year I was there, the Central Committee tabled for approval from the Peoples Congress for a bullet train service from Shanghai to Beijing. It was approved and subsequently built before time and under budget. Since then there is 30+ thousand miles of track laid.
The fascist West is controlled by oligarchs, the wealthy, the elite, and their prostitute politicians, this is a fact. All sides are controlled. Parties are different cheeks of the same butt, meanwhile everything is in gridlock and morals and integrity falling. The multi-party system is dying as it slowly falls victim to narcissists and psychopaths who thrive in this cesspool of corruption where honest people can not survive and the scum without restraint rise to the top. This phenomenon has been subject to study, the rise and fall of empires. The cycle is approx 250 years, USA Inc is there, happy birthday USA Inc.
Factoid.
There are more Christians in China then the population of Australia, 50 million of them or so.
India, more billionaires than China (?) , but there are no Chinese living from birth to death on the streets, eating, procreating, amongst the filth and sewage.
The Uyghurs of Xinjiang are majority Muslim. They were left behind, being a very impoverished part of China with harsh environment and large families keeping them backward. There was no doubt a nationalist movement that found fertile ground for converts. It was also fertile ground for Western interests to attack China at its underbelly. China dealt with it like Russia dealt with its Chechen nationalist trouble fomented by Western forces. Both countries were forced to confront poverty and underdevelopment and are succeeding. China never conducted genocide, and of all Chinese provinces, never conducted a one child policy in Xinjiang. China is bringing these people out of abject poverty to enjoy sanitation, housing, education business opportunities whilst leaving them to enjoy their culture and religion. Indigenous peoples of China and Russia have not been obliterated, but there is a dominant people, and in both cases, minorities are respected, within the confines of a larger State or super State as both these nations are.
South China Sea is China’s sphere of influence . China has been identified and targeted as as enemy of USA Inc and USA Inc has surrounded it with military bases. China must respond. It is doing exactly what I would do, protect my people. Any fool, idiot, half-wit, retard will know that if you threaten one, that person will defend itself. USA Inc was warned by Russia not to let the IBM Treaty to lapse, or it would have to counter the situation. USA Inc said screw you, and Russia had to develop weapons to protect itself. Narcissistic, sociopath scum leaders in the West are in control and they act true to type.
When will my white brethren wake up.
If one travels to China then one can not but be impressed by Western style development.
A grand experiment in human history as the most populace state in the world integrates technology
like a tsunami into everyday life.
I pray for the best outcome for China and their people as they forge a brave new world.
The blind and bought Freddie’s of the world will be our undoing, or as Christians believe,
the “father of lies” unleashed.
Hey GD, the Chinese should take a page out of the Israeli’s book, and send you and your fair maiden to China for a grand tour.
Wish you a blessed day from the North, open your eyes to the light in the North.
Graham Davis says
Keep taking the tablets, Ian. You are a complete effing nutter.
Completely blind to the appalling human rights abuses in China and the total lack of democracy. Not to mention its belligerence and its axis of evil with Russia and Iran that threatens world peace.
Your “white brethren” aren’t going to “wake up”. They’re already awake to the danger. Unlike you and the other useful idiots in Fiji who side with the Chinese Communist Party.
Ian Simpson says
EuKISUS – axis of evil. Ethos of lie, cheat, steal, sanction, siege, destroy, kill, genocide.
To my ” white brethren”, act before it is to late, if you value your children and grandchildren.
How ironic, the once totalitarian states of Russia and China are the countries that are abiding by International Law.
The West, especially, the 5 brown eyes, the tip of the spear, have become “tools” of unbounded oligarchs , globalists and Marxists . The world has been turned into one big Corporate Gulag and peoples its inmates. Their battle cry is ” International Rules based Order”, hahaha, what a joke, it just means our way or Bombs Away !
GD, The very countries that you decry are one standing against this phenomena, but make no mistake it is a mighty battle, that they may still fail against.
Evil never sleeps.
Corporate Main Stream Media is one giant massive propaganda and PR organ for the Owners.
The more the EuKISUS sanctions, the more whom they sanction succeed. It is the height of stupidity and idiocy. That is why my white brethren need to wake up, they a heading to Armageddon, failing that, economic and social collapse.
There are specks of light out there in the alternative media, real honest journalists and commentators that are truth tellers and observers. There are even politicians, as about as many as we have fingers on one hand, out there, fighting and getting pounded by evil all the way.
Graham Davis says
Ian, what total hogwash. It is China that is violating international law in the South China Sea and Russia illegally invaded a sovereign country.
There is something severely wrong with you. Intellectually challenged to the point of insanity. Take some aspirin and have a good lie down.
