As Grubsheet reported on the weekend, the man who was once a principled advocate for good governance and almost wound up in a lovo pit dug for him by ethno-nationalists in 1987 says he is “sick” of the Commission of Inquiry into the Malimali Affair and has defended the right of ethno-nationalists to stage marches calling for the abolition of the 2013 Constitution.
It has been an astonishing about-face by Richard Naidu, who, among other things, also stands accused of using his position as Chair of the Coalition government’s Fiscal Review Committee to deliver a seven-year company tax holiday for Fiji Water – the billionaire clients of his law firm, Munro Leys.
One of Naidu’s comrades in the Indo-Fijian resistance movement of 1987 against Sitiveni Rabuka‘s ethno-nationalist forces after they staged a coup against the government of Timoci Bavadra – for whom Naidu worked – is the Oxford-based academic and journalist Victor Lal of Fijileaks.
Like Grubsheet, Victor Lal criticises Richard Naidu for his dismissive attitude to the Ashton-Lewis Commission of Inquiry and Naidu’s role in preventing FICAC, the corruption watchdog, from charging his close associate, the Deputy Prime Minister and NFP leader, Biman Prasad.
He also expresses dismay that given his history in 1987, Naidu could be defending the right of ethno-nationalists to stage public marches in support of abolishing a non-racial constitution when those marches were the prelude to civil unrest and political upheaval 38 years ago.

When it comes to money and power, anyone becomes a turncoat – even prominent lawyers. It reveals the true character of such people. Professional ethics, honesty and integrity only takes priority if it suits their personal agenda depending on the circumstances at the time.
This is not about the good of the wider community, this is all about the benefit to oneself.
These kind treat the people who they are charged to serve with contempt.
And that is exactly what most in Fiji want – sad but true.
Richard Naidu described opposition MP Ketan Lal as K1, alluding to British submarines of WWI.
The Royal Navy K class designated submarines were fighting the German U Boats as well as other surface ships.
A historical reminder: A Lovo is also known as an Underground oven…code name UL1?
Another historical designation reminder: D-Day and V-Day.
Great Britain and it’s allies eventually won. The anti-submarine depth charges and torpedoes have been deployed by Judge Ashton-Lewis and his Counsel Assisting (CA or KC) Janet Mason on D-Day against those hiding below the surface. Just a matter of time before it’s V-Day and all the crocodiles hiding under the surface will eventually have to come up exposed.
Yeah- Bring on the battle Mr LLB !
Sometimes I feel like letting people in Fiji suffer. After all, most of the things are their fault. They want to suffer. There are people in Fiji who say they want to migrate out of the country to Australia, New Zealand, Canada and USA. And they ask you for information and also migration application forms. And you go out of your way to get it all for them and help them. You write long E-mails consisting of thousands of words to explain the people how the migration process to a particular country works. They’ll say that they’ll apply for migration. Only for them to later on not bother about it and say that they forgot or changed their mind. In the end you did all that running around for nothing. And that’s the type of people that exist in Fiji. They like to struggle to survive with their low paying jobs and live in fear of robberies, rapes and racism. They enjoy it.
Hello Slacker- it’s term called Learned Helplessness
Google it and hopefully it will calm down your frustration
Come next elections remember the names.
Remember when Biman, Shashi, Richard come begging for votes. The great betrayers.
Richard Naidu, I used to admire him. Didn’t know he was such a leech.
A public discourse on the 2013 Constitution whilst at the very same time the validity of it and that of the racist 1997 Constitution is before the Supreme Court?
How remarkable, not! Part of the ethno-nationalist agenda to return to the old ways of the 1990’s and the emasculation of minorities in Fiji.
Richard Naidu seems to have abandoned his earlier mantra, in the days of 1987, and now it appears, to embrace the ethno-nationalist agenda. How remarkable.
As for the celebrated COI report and its public release it seems almost that it will not happen. We are given assurances it will, but it does not happen. Another example of Rabuka saying one thing and doing another, the master of flim-flam!
No doubt those named or those under a cloud have been “advised” so that evidence can be hidden, no longer be in existence and any witnesses “schooled’. All the hallmarks of a coverup being orchestrated?
Glad I am no longer in Fiji!
Put Richard on the front line when the Suva march happens.
daddy Richard is so spoilt!
I don’t think our commentators are being fair to Sashi Kiran.
How so …this women has been going around and asking for forgiveness on behalf of the Indians from the itaukei ..for what,is she just dumb or has been sleeping that the events of 87 and 2000 flew above her head.
