# A NATION THAT DOESN’T KNOW WHETHER TO LAUGH OR THROW UP (UPDATED TUES PM WITH SENSATIONAL FURTHER DETAIL)

Posted on September 24, 2024 27 Comments

Bring out the tissues, Fiji, and pass around the buckets. Because the first rapist of democracy , Sitiveni Rabuka – who seized power at gunpoint in 1987 – is claiming that he was a “victim” of the 2000 rebellion and wants George Speight to tell the truth and clear him of any involvement.

WTF? From a man who can’t lie straight in bed at night, this is the mother of all insults to the many thousands of people who genuinely suffered in 2000 – the women who were raped, those who were bashed, those who had their possessions stolen and property destroyed by the rampaging mobs of iTaukei who set upon their fellow citizens. Plus the tens of thousands who simply gave up on Fiji and joined the first exodus that Sitiveni Rabuka himself triggered in 1987 and is again happening under his leadership 37 years later.

And the Prime Minister is casting himself as a victim?? I think I’m going to be sick. Because this is the mother of all outrages among the many outrages for which Rabuka is also directly responsible since his miserable crew of freeloaders took power by one vote at the last election promising change for the better and have instead delivered dysfunction and chaos. And on top of it all, have triggered a fresh wave of apprehension and fear among the minorities by freeing George Speight and the murderous Shane Stevens, sending more people scurrying for the exits.

The Snake tells us we have “nothing to worry about”. Yeah, sure. In the same breath he says that George Speight is going to be part of the truth and reconciliation process. Which will mean to many people that he is paving the way for Speight to enter politics. There is absolutely nothing now to prevent that from happening. And for the 2000 rebels and their 1987 kai vata to achieve their aim of complete indigenous supremacy – the tyranny of the majority – not through the barrel of the gun but from within the citadel of our democracy – the parliament.

A sharp-eyed Grubsheet reader points out that there is no constitutional bar to Speight contesting the next election. On the question of eligibility, it is all there in Section 56 (2) (g) which allows a prospective candidate to stand who “has not, at any time during the 8 years immediately before being nominated, been convicted of any offence under any law for which the maximum penalty is a term of imprisonment of 12 months or more”. As our reader says: “The key words are ‘during the 8 years immediately before being nominated’. George Speight was not convicted within that time. He was convicted of treason more than 20 years ago!”

So the stage is set for the rapist of democracy in 2000 to join the rapist of democracy in 1987 in the parliament in 2026 to complete their mission of total indigenous supremacy. Anyone who thinks there is going to be genuine truth from these treasonous, lying bastards is a fool. So far from having “nothing to worry about” – as the Prime Minister ludicrously claims – the minorities in Fiji have never been in more peril. Because there is now a concerted effort to formally establish them as “vulagi” – visitors – in the upcoming review of the Constitution and propel them to the sidelines of national life.

Ask yourself this, Fiji. Why won’t our political leaders answer the most basic question of all. Do you propose to change the 2013 Constitution to alter the existing provisions for a common and equal citizenry, a common identity and a secular state? Grubsheet, for one, has been asking the question for months. And what do we get? Silence. Ergo it is coming, Fiji. And we now know that it will be delivered by the forces who raped democracy and stole our futures in 1987 and 2000 and are going to do it again because they can. The impediments – not least the RFMF and its cuddly Commander – have been progressively removed.

Rabuka – as the Snake he is – wails that he is a “victim” of speculation that he was somehow involved in the Speight takeover of May 19 2000 and that George Speight is now in a position to set the record straight. As Grubsheet understands it (and I did a Nine Network investigation into who was behind the rebellion with the whistleblower, Maciu Navakasuasua ) Sitiveni Rabuka’s name has never been part of the mix. The principal figure was the shadowy Iliesa Duvuloco, although who he was acting for is as opaque as most events in Fiji.

On the other hand, Sitiveni Rabuka has always been very much a part of the speculation as to who was behind the mutiny in the RFMF in November of the same year. We know that the instigator was the high chief of Naitasiri, the Qaranivalu, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, because he was convicted and sent to prison with the other conspirators but is now out. We know that the leader of the RFMF rebels who killed three loyalist soldiers in cold blood was Captain Shane Stevens, who has just been released with George Speight. But the unresolved question is this:

Why did Sitiveni Rabuka suddenly appear up at the Camp as the firefight took place all around him with his old uniform in the back of his car? The then RFMF commander, Frank Bainimarama, has always maintained that Rabuka was one of the conspirators – perhaps the main conspirator – in the attempt to kill him and seize control of the military and the country. But in two subsequent criminal trials – the second an appeal by the State against the first verdict – Sitiveni Rabuka was acquitted because of a lack of evidence.

Shane Stevens pictured last Thursday

Why is all this relevant? Because contrary to the front pages today, it isn’t George Speight who can bring an end to poor Siti being a “victim”. Maciu Navakasuasua says Speight was a last-minute choice to enter the parliament and seize control on May 19 because the late Savenaca Draunidalo got cold feet. No. It is Shane Stevens who is best able to shed light on Rabuka’s involvement, not with the May rebellion but the November mutiny. And surprise, surprise, the Prime Minister – as he shamelessly claims victimhood – doesn’t mention Shane Stevens or the mutiny at all.

UPDATE:

And why might that be? Because Shane Stevens told the trial of the Qaranivalu in 2004 that Sitiveni Rabuka wanted Frank Bainimarama “removed”. Did that include killing the then Commander and anyone else who got in the way? Was Rabuka waiting with his uniform in the car assuming that Frank Bainimarama had already been shot when instead, Bainimarama had escaped from the Camp through a cassava patch? Was Rabuka planning to take charge of the military and of the country?

We await further details from Shane Stevens with a great deal of interest. But does Sitiveni Rabuka sound like a victim here? Read on and decide for yourself.

Has the Prime Minister opened a proverbial Pandora’s Box that will eventually swallow him for his treachery and mendacity? We shall see. But this very much sounds like Frank Bainimarama as the victim of a plot to remove him and Sitiveni Rabuka as one of the instigators, not a victim.

Rabuka perpetuates another big lie in today’s papers – that the Mercy Commission that freed Speight and Stevens last Thursday and the other miserable members of the gang earlier – is entirely independent of government. As Grubsheet has reported, it isn’t independent at all. The Commission is chaired by the Attorney General and its headquarters are in the AG’s office at Level 7 in Suvavou House. Siromi Turaga when he was AG also handpicked the other four members of the Commission and as Grubsheet also reported, the Constitution stipulates that their recommendations must be accepted by the President. So to claim otherwise takes this government’s chronic mendacity to yet another level.

So where are we today? With a Prime Minister who cries crocodile tears about the way he suffered in 2000 and lies about the process that has led to the leaders of both the rebellion and the mutiny being freed. He is also laying the groundwork for a truth and reconciliation process involving George Speight that he shamelessly suggests will end his status as a “victim” by clearing him of involvement in the May 2000 takeover. Yet he makes no mention of the November 2000 mutiny, when he was physically present at the Camp and left only when the loyalists threatened to shoot him.

So what are we going to get, Fiji? The actual truth? Yeah, pigs fly and Lynda Tabuya is giving up sex, drugs and Jack Daniels. It will be more lies swallowed by a gullible media and electorate followed by George Speight joining the other indigenous supremacists in government to complete the mission of 1987 and 2000 and plough up the level playing field in Fiji once and for all.

You a “victim”, Prime Minister? Pass the bucket, Sulueti. I’m definitely going to be sick.

There could be a condition of release, Speight undertaking and declaring that he acted alone and Rabuka had no involvement in any of those coups or violence.

Evidence given at the Rabuka mutiny trial was deemed heresay so he got off. But those who were connected intimately with bringing the CRW rebels under control believed that he was a conspirator.

The coup in 2000 was really about getting rid of the Lauans. We Indians were convenient scapegoats back then – much like bridal underwear on honeymoon night – we were conveniently tossed aside as the Melanesians screwed the Tongans like wild pigs.

The Kadavuans and Tailevu Naitasiri mob are now in control.

Then at 6 am these leaders of Fiji wake up for breakfast and only one shop is open ,a kaiviti owned Bread shop. Errrr how we gonna get to town to loot the Indian shops? Errr steal a bus from the now departed Indians.
Oh darn ,a month later the fuel supplies have run dry and a new PM of Fiji emerges, Wang Yi.
Isa that was such a nice evening last night . We celebrated a defeat and now there’s no food , clothing and motor vehicles to drive because of no fuel in Fiji. Areh wah ! When the Speight coup happened only one shop remained open in Savusavu. It was the Gulabdas shop. The army were seen loading bags of groceries and supplies from here.

This shop was owned by Satish Gulabdas who was a minister in Rabuka’s government. Satish has been blacklisted from Fiji. He owned a sawmill in Savusavu.

Recently the hall at the Prime Minster’s village was completed. The Gulabdas family were the material suppliers and travelled to be part of the opening ceremony for the hall.

Many of the CRW soldiers were trained around the same village for the PM.

One will be naive to believe that Rabuka had nothing to do with all this. The shameless snake thinks he is smart but is an absolute dumb (or dump).

Fiji wanted to prosper and have a change. They have changed for the worse.
They thought they could escape history and be ignorant. Well the history is here to live. These idiots will only repeat what they see benefiting them. They are not worried about water pipes, rotting hospitals, etc. Hail the change. Good luck a uncivilised and racist country which the tourism world is slowly coming to see. Get ready for reduced tourism numbers as who dares visit a country with drugs everywhere and where women and girls are easily physically and sexually assaulted.

When Lynda Tabuya and Methodist Church wanted to Ban Diwali on Sunday, Biman and Sanatan Dharam went into hiding. There were so many Hindu Temple sacriledges under FFP, Biman blamed Aiyaz of organising it. Not a single Temple attack happened under Coalition. Figure that out!!
The Hindu Post article denouncing one particular faith, those attacks disappeared. I could go on and on, Iam a Hindu my gf is Of Islamic faith, it really saddens me that NFP was the instigator of r@cial rift in Fiji. Political Interference is Visible

This government and its so-called independent institutions, which are headed by their chosen ones, are doing what the government wants them to do. Their independance is compromised by government interference.

The recent cases of the government elites who were being investigated suddenly were stopped following the controversial appointment of FICAC Commissioner, who herself was under investigation by the very institution she is heading now. One of Babara Malimali’s statements to media was that there is now a commissioner, and she will decide.

Isn’t it in the best interest of the government and its integrity to ensure these ministers are stood aside until their investigations are completed. If they are cleared, they can get back to their positions, but if they are charged, then they can’t hold the ministerial positions.

Or since there are too many of them under investigation, Rabuka may be wary of his government’s downfall.

He need not worry when nine of the former Fiji First Party MPs now support him.

So Rabuka, be a man and call the shot. You will at least reclaim some of the lost dignity.

The Coalition government, under the guise of its preferred appointees in DPP, Judiciary, government, and statutory boards, are more concerned with prosecuting their political opponents.

Case in point is Bainimarama and Qiliho’s conviction by Acting Chief Justice when the magistrate hearing the case had pronounced not guilty verdict on two occasions. But the Acting Chief Justice reversed the decision and jailed them to 1 – and 2-year sentences, respectively. Their cases were also pursued by the Acting Director of Public Prosecution, whose appointment was illegal.

Then you have as many as 9 ministers of the government under FICAC investigation, and all of them still remain under investigation. Some feel that with the hasty appointment of FICAC commissioner, there may be pressure on FICAC not to charge them.

A case in point is Biman Prasad. He was going to be charged, but due to interference, this was stopped, and the former acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC has been blamed for initiating investigation and charges without evidence.

Rabuka says that his government is not behind the release of George Speight, but in December 2022, he is on record saying that Speight will be released. This was his election promise.

Why was Ratu Tevita and Nata upon their releaae from jail treated as heroes, and the President held a state ceremony for them where government ministers were present. Is this not political interference?

So, how can Rabuka now say that the government is not involved.

Where it suites their narrative, the government remains silent. However, the people of this country are realizing the double speak of this government.

With all the chaos happening with Ficac and coalition government, those that looted when Fiji First was in power would be laughing away.
Many voted for change, assuming that a honest government would come in to clean up.
Now they are in the same .
We see it’s another layer of dirt settling on the files.
Where have all the talking gone before election is anyone’s guess.
Investigation will start in first 100 days of power on institution such as,
      Roads department
      Water Authority
      Walesi
      FSC
      FDB

Do I believe Rabuka? Hell will freeze over before he speaks anything to believe!

He deceived and lied to the Fijian people at the 2022 Election. His aim was to be elected to be the Government and he got that curtesy of the NFP (get Government at all costs) and the SODELPA who somehow believed they could control Rabuka!

Before the next election Rabuka will jettison both NFP and SODELPA aided by the former members of the Fiji First party, led by a former Military commander.

Now the Fijian people will pay as Rabuka institutes his policies from 1987. The policies will be fulfilled aided and abetted by the AG, Minister for Justice and the despot A/CJ, who all appear to be disciples of those policies. As are members of the PAP and some former members Fiji First.

As for the 2000 coup it seems few believe that Rabuka was not involved. Will Speight reveal who was involved? Not likely, he can see that Rabuka is doing what he wants. Those in Parliament who were part of the military will not utter a word about the 2000 coup or any of the other coups.

The charade of a Commission for Truth and Reconciliation is just that a charade. It will be a whitewash for the Government as they move to have all those, including Rabuka, Speight, Stevens and others involved in the 4 coups in Fiji totally forgiven. They will admit nothing and just say sorry and that will be it.

    Will hell freeze over?

It’s obvious that people think the victims should forgive and get over it already because that’s the Fijian way. It’s easy to say when they were not the victims. No matter how much and how many times RABUKA and his AG and Minister for Justice deny political interference by the government in Malimali’s appointment as FICAC Commissioner, it is becoming abundantly clear that the Coalition Government has interfered with not only in FICAC’s case of Malimali but her appointment as FICAC Commissioner as well.

Having listened to Francis Puleiwai’s interview with ABC Australia there is no doubt that even the Acting Chief Justice and the Chief Registrar and senior lawyers including Wiley Clarke who is the President of Law Society are also involved in defense of Malimali. Wiley Clarke, in his capacity as president of the Fiji Law Society, should be upholding the law.

Then, one can clearly notice that Malimali stopped the arrest and charge of Biman Prasad. Biman then has the audacity to say that his lawyers, principally Richard Naidu, have spoken with FICAC, and they are handling Biman’s case.

How on earth, and since when do lawyers in Fiji avert their clients being charged for an offense? Is it not the duty of lawyers to argue their clients’ cases in court and not outside the court when charges are about to be laid?

There is enough evidence now that there has been political interference in the appointment of Malimali, stopping charges against her and using Malimali to stop Biman from being charged.

Since the AG, Siromi, and other 7 or 8 ministers under FICAC investigation, there is every likelihood that they are also involved in perverting the cause of justice regarding their own cases.

Graham, the situation is grave in Fiji. Who will then look at these ? The Acting Chief Justice and Acting ODPP are clearly put into position by the Coalition government, and the President and Commander are towing the line. Don’t expect any of them to look at the facts.

The mainstream media except Fiji Sun is blind and has lost the basics of journalism and fair and critical reporting.

And of course, the Prime Minister, he changes his tune like the tide. What he says is not taken seriously. His common utterance is ” I am not informed or I am not aware of.

About Grubsheet

Graham Davis
Grubsheet Feejee is the blogsite of Graham Davis, an award-winning journalist turned communications consultant who was the Fijian Government’s principal communications advisor for six years from 2012 to 2018 and continued to work on Fiji’s global climate and oceans campaign up until the end of the decade.

Fiji-born to missionary parents and a dual Fijian-Australian national, Graham spent four decades in the international media before returning to Fiji to work full time in 2012. He reported from many parts of the world for the BBC, ABC, SBS, the Nine and Seven Networks and Sky News and wrote for a range of newspapers and magazines in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.
