So the outlaw and thug, Salesi Temo, was sworn in as Chief Justice by the pedophile president, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, at State House at 10.00am this morning, confirming once and for all that an independent judiciary in Fiji is dead.
It was the most perverse of occasions – Salesi Temo swearing on the Bible to uphold the Constitution (“so help me God!”) when he is a serial violator of the supreme law who has spearheaded the appointment of people of the lowest character such as John Rabuku and Barbara Malimali to some of our most important public roles.
He is a man perfectly at ease with lying to the Almighty with his hand clutching the Holy Scriptures on the eve of the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ.
It is effectively the end of proper governance in Fiji because as the lawyer, Imrana Jalal, said on the weekend, Temo will be there for “decades” manipulating the judiciary to suit the purposes of his relative, the President, and his patron, the Prime Minister. There is now a malevolent “Trio of Misfits” in total control of the State with no brakes whatsoever on their power because of the loss of an effective opposition in the parliament.
Salesi Temo has already been prepared to violate the constitution with illegal appointments and overturn judicial decisions to achieve the government’s objectives. He has threatened to sool the police onto magistrates in violation of the law. He appointed a convicted drink-driver as Chief Registrar. He cast the DPP as a thief in false testimony to the Pryde Tribunal. And he has waged war against the nation’s women in the courts, blaming them in rape cases for provoking attacks because of their dress and conduct. He is, in short, a despicable individual who is unfit for high office of any sort.
Even the Prime Minister acknowledges the highly contentious nature of Temo’s appointment in his comments in this morning’s Fiji Times as the Coalition uses the cover of the Christmas holiday to ram through the announcement with minimum chance of dissent. This appointment has been literally sprung on the Fijian people on the eve of a religious holiday when everyone is distracted. And with no warning whatsoever apart from Imrana Jalal’s Facebook posting, which the mainstream media ignored. In a betrayal of the most fundamental principle in any democracy, our elected representatives have been completely bypassed.
Sitiveni Rabuka promised the Fiji Law Society a year ago that Salesi Temo would not be confirmed as chief Justice. He has shamelessly broken that promise, just as he has broken so many other promises and routinely lies to the Fijian people. We were all conned at the last election into believing his assurances that he had changed, had embraced a Fiji for all and would strengthen the nation’s institutions and the quality of governance. Instead he has weakened Fiji to strengthen his own hold on power in easily the biggest and most cynical act of political bastardly in the nation’s history.
So now the outlaw, Salesi Temo, joins Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu – the convicted criminal and someone who impregnated a 15 year old girl – at the apex of the state. We have the Tui Cakau as President for at least four years and perhaps another four if he gets a second term, though pray God a new government in 2026 brings his sorry tenure to an end. But we have Salesi Temo as Chief Justice and alternative head of state way beyond that well into the 2030s. His is a permanent appointment and any new government would have to try him for misbehaviour to get rid of him.
Christmas Eve has become the saddest of days in Fiji. Two years ago it heralded the arrival of a racist, dysfunctional government that has been a disaster for the nation. And on Christmas Eve, 2024, that government completes its assault on the independent offices of state by appointing one of its own – a man whose record shows that he is totally unfit for high office – to sit at the apex of the judiciary and manipulate the scales of justice in the government’s favour.
Consider this, Fiji. We have a convicted criminal, alleged child abuser and the Prime Minister’s own chief as President. We have his cousin’s husband as Chief Justice sitting at the top with him. And we have Sitiveni Rabuka who has orchestrated it all – a man without honour and scruples who by the power of one vote two years ago, seized control of the parliament and now the state to complete the agenda he began in 1987. Except that it isn’t for the benefit of ordinary iTaukei but for the benefit of himself and his cronies.
All hope is lost that the institutions of state that underpin any functioning democracy can survive in Fiji now that this Trio of Misfits is in control. As Chief Justice, Salesi Temo wields immense power and has already shown that he doesn’t give a damn about the Constitution and the rule of law. Watch as he does precisely what the Trio and their gaggle of unquestioning followers wants him to do. Watch him bulldoze through changes to the 2013 Constitution to disadvantage the minorities using his authority in the courts.
Today marks the end of Fiji as we know it in terms of respect for proper process and the rule of law. We are entering a new dark age in which no-one who comes up against the State can be sure of fair treatment because the State is there to keep Sitiveni Rabuka in power and do his bidding, along with the iTaukei elite behind him.
It is a catastrophe for confidence in the rule of law. It is a catastrophe for investment because people need to know that the courts are independent and that is no longer the case. And it is a catastrophe for the nation’s future, not least because the great exodus from the country, which has seen tens of thousands of Fijians already leave, is bound to accelerate because all hope is lost.
There is simply no point in anyone advocating a coup to remove these people even if there was someone capable of doing it. With the current RFMF Commander more obsessed with “reconciliation” than proper governance, the Trio of Misfits are in total control and accountable to no-one.
It is they who staged a coup this morning – total state capture without a shot being fired. The coup of 1987 is being completed at precisely the same hour – 10.00am – as Sitiveni Rabuka stormed the parliament 37 years ago. And there’s not a damn thing the Fijian people can do about it until the next election in 2026, if at all.

Poor Imrana Jalal. The Prime Minister, in his comments to the Fiji Times, appears to accuse her of a “personal agenda designed to smear a judicial officer”.
Like Francis Puleiwai (and Grubsheet), she would be best advised to give Fiji a wide berth from now on. Because a charge of contempt and bringing the judiciary into disrepute undoubtedly awaits.
Whatever her motives, Imrana Jalal did what the local media should have done – alert us all to this outrage and try to head it off. And for that, she deserves a great deal of credit.

The only person to blame in this debacle is Rabuka. He was voted into parliament under the 2013 Consitution by the people. President Lalabalavu and Salesi Temo were sworn into their respective positions with the blessings of the people that voted Rabuka in. Rabuka has morally and deliberately abused the powers under the Constitution that the people entrusted him in. That is why there is no real effort by Rabuka to change or even review the Constitution. I hope that those (PAP, SODELPA and NFP voters) that aided and abetted this process under their right in the electoral process have finally learned their lessons, albeit the hard way!
