The deposed Head of Journalism at the University of the South Pacific, Dr Marc Edge, continues to expose himself to opprobrium and worse with his continuing antics behind the scenes with his students. He evidently sees it as his role to peddle an anonymous scandal sheet feigning exchanges between Grubsheet and Sharon Smith Johns, the Permanent Secretary for Information in the Fijian Government. The phantom posting may be amusing, especially for the Government’s opponents, and Grubsheet regards it as benign. Yet it’s staggering that Dr Edge thinks that it is appropriate for a senior lecturer at USP to pass on this drivel to those he is meant to be schooling in the serious practice of Pacific journalism. In our view, he is abusing his office and it’s high time that the USP brings this continuing farce to a halt.

Marc, it is the action of passing this on to your students that is the issue here, not whether you write it. I note that you acknowledge doing so, thereby freely admitting to bringing the Fijian Government into continuing disrepute with your students at USP.

Truncated Lounge, whoever he is, could fairly be described as Fiji’s most sensational writer. His biting political satire is nothing less than a social phenomenon. It speaks volumes to the repressive climate surrounding Fiji media. I plan to write an academic paper on the subject. As this will be my next avenue of research, I felt it was my duty to pass along this excellent example of writing to my students. That’s part of my job. But I can understand if you don’t appreciate his biting criticism. I know exactly how you must feel. These letters must be almost as hard to take as your attacks have been on me and my students.

The USP’s response to the increasingly bizarre Marc Edge saga is to formally replace him as head of school with a poet in Sudesh Mishra who has no experience in journalism and keep Edge as Senior Lecturer in nominal control of the entire program. Some demotion.

USP’s VC Rajesh Chandra is thought to lack backbone. He lost out on the VC’s job on two previous occasions to better candidates before getting lucky the third time. He is seen as timid, confirmed by his lack of action against mad marc and mediocre mishra.
I have not been particularly interested in the postings on apects of the fourth estate, though I can understand grubsheet’s interest. But for once I did ‘tune in’ and rather regretted it. After reading that post from Edge, I have just one question. This guy is a senior academic at USP?? This is some of the most childish drivel I have seen in quite a while. I’ll tell you exactly what the problem is, Graham. You simply accept the claims of a few disgruntled students without bothering to hear both sides of the story. Almost without exception, these are students who have been either recently dropped from the Journalism programme or asked to answer claims of Academic Dishonesty. You don’t seem to have any conception of something called due process, to which I have a fundamental right. I have been assured by my Dean that the few complaints that have been lodged against me are not of great concern to her. I have been provided the details of only one of four complaints that have apparently been lodged. I was able to easily rebut that complaint because it was almost laughably without merit. It was from a student who has been taking courses at USP since 2006, has a grade-point average of 0.98 (1.0 is a D), and previously flunked out of Law. I refused to register her this semester for third-year courses after she failed a required second-year course for a second time. University regulations state that a student may not sit a unit for a third time. Two of the other complaints are from students whose cases are well known to me and I am confident that I am very solid ground there as well. One of them rarely attended my class last semester or submitted assignments, yet you loudly proclaim it as scandalous that I would dare to fail her. Believe me, the scandal would be if I passed her. The fourth is from a third-year student I hardly know, as he is on staff at one of the dailies and recently returned to school to complete his studies. We have never had any contact as far as I am aware. These four students have been offered mediation on their complaints by USP. That was to have started this week, but apparently at least one is refusing to even meet with me to discuss their complaint. I think that speaks volumes about the merits of their complaints. Perhaps they do not want their complaints heard because they know that they are without merit. What can I do? I feel that I simply have to answer your allegations against me, as my first-year students are almost frantic on the eve of their final exam as a result of your nonsense and the vicious postings of anonymous commenters who promise they will never get jobs. Yet they are among the brightest students I have taught anywhere in the world. You really should be ashamed of yourself. I am not prepared to endure your ceaseless, baseless attacks against me and my students without finally correcting some facts. I believe that fair-minded people will see you for the bully and propagandist that you are and will allow me to at least hear and answer the complaints against me before judging me.

Mr Davis has raised valid concerns about what is happening at the University of the South Pacific journalism school. Mr Davis has done so as an international journalist who has won some big awards in journalism. We in Fiji should be proud that one of our own has done so well.
There must also be something seriously wrong for USP to have now demoted this fellow from Canada who seems to be always surrounded in controversy. I think we all know some of his comments in this debate are not what would be expected from an academic.
Anyone who has attended USP will know that it is a very cautious and slow moving institution. The fact that it has moved as quick as it has in this instance suggests it has found there is something seriously wrong at the USP journalism school.
Please, let us focus on this issue as it is the students who are suffering and whose future lives are at stake. It all seems very sad and my heart goes out for the students not this strange man from Canada.

The USP needs to also be held accountable for allowing this situation to deteriorate to this level. The V.C must take control and remove Edge immediately. To do nothing suggest he supports this massive abuse of office and is willing to jeopardise the credibility and teaching standards at the USP.

Perhaps what USP can do in order to identify how students and staffs really feel towards Edge and Mishra and proposed actions on the two are as follows:
a) Hand out questionnaires to all journalism students and USP journalism staffs where they can anonymously fill it in but only declare whether they are 1st, 2nd or 3rd year students or USP staffs.
b) All journalism students and staffs should all be encouraged to respond to this short questionnaire (as their duty to assist USP mgmt in deciding on this issue) and hand it in perhaps to a group of neutral USP officers – like USP Librarians – who can ensure that filled in questionnaires are from genuine people and identities and comments are strictly kept confidential – and all forms are dropped in a locked box.
c) Then comments and data to be analyzed and given to the Deputy VC and mgmt for their information.
The above can assist USP mgmt and the investigative team in having a more in-depth and informative picture of students and staffs views of Edge and Mishra.
Perhaps the above may assist.

Several emails purporting to come from Marc Edge and Sudesh Mishra have been removed because they were counterfeit. The person responsible has been permanently banned from Grubsheet. The other Edge and Mishra contributions are genuine.

What can the government do in this scenario?? I think being the host of a very major educational institution, the government has got a moral responsibility to see that the students education, and, indeed their career is not not compromised by some selfish opportunists..

CLARIFICATIONS PLEASE:
I have a few questions in relation to what Edge said and ask you guys for help as I need help to gauge where I stand on this issue:
1) Edge said: ‘I have been assured by my Dean that the few complaints that have been lodged against me are not of great concern to her.’
Issue: A few written complaints lodged against Edge. Various comments from students here in Grubsheet. Various concerns from public.
Question: Is it proper for USP – given the publicity and the various comments from students (here in Grubsheet) and public and those few written complaints to USP – for USP to ensure that a wider view is obtained on this Edge saga?
I earlier suggest something like an opinion poll to gauge the general feeling and view within the School of Journalism. Perhaps you guys and USP and the above 3 gentlemen can clarify on this.
2) Edge said: ‘These four students have been offered mediation on their complaints by USP. That was to have started this week, but apparently at least one is refusing to even meet with me to discuss their complaint. I think that speaks volumes about the merits of their complaints. Perhaps they do not want their complaints heard because they know that they are without merit. What can I do?’
Issue: Students and Edge have been placed in a very difficult situation in this whole thing. They may not be seeing eye-to-eye on issues.
Question: Is it proper for USP to deliberately allow such a situation for students to face Edge directly and not handle or take ownership of the matter and put in place a more balanced mechanism to enable all both Edge and students to freely voice their honest opinions?
As it is it seems the system employed by USP is one-sided towards Edge. It’s the system I’m looking at.
Please guys help as my intelligence is very limited.
The other reason for (2) above is that I don’t know how Students can win a debate with their Master. It would have been more appropriate if someone of Edge’s ‘equal’ to represent them.

Sudesh and the Vc can be dealt with here in Fiji and as usual these 2 guys will have a foreign passport as well…..and we can predict the future about them……it is like the cycle that we have gone with Wadan and company.
The larger question is about Mark Edge.
I believe we need to take the fight to his home province of Vancouver. We somehow need to highlight this rats behaviour here in Fiji to the news media in Vancouver.
Maybe a link from this blog to the online readers of various news sites in Canada.
I did mention in my earlier writeup about certain “critics” who thought Edges writeup was just a cut and paste from other sources and if I recall correctly, one critic mentioned that Egde would be lucky to get a job in “this” part of the world….meaning Vancouver.
Maybe we should get in touch with them…..this guy is embarrasing Vancouver and Canada. I have been to Canada many times and the people of all “races” are great…of course you will find twisted ones around in all communities…..but this depraved soul goes to the extreeme.

I did research on this Edgee guy some months back…starting with his so called book on the media in Canada and also on some sport thingi/ownership etc….just google/book critic etc…it is a labourious process but I must admit I did not keep a file on him as I considered at that time that USP should have diciplined him on his promotional ad in Fiji Times….we all learn from our mistakes…..but it should not be hard to gather infor on him…….use google mate and keep me posted as well and I will do it again n let you know
