The following is the proposed replacement for the 2013 Constitution that the parliament will vote on on Friday (Oct 2).
If it is passed by at least two-thirds of the parliament, it will go to another reading in a month’s time.
And if it is passed again then, it will go to a referendum of all voters. If more than 50 per cent of them approve, then it becomes Fiji’s supreme law, but not until March 31 2028.
What happens in the meantime? Well the 2013 Constitution remains in place, which means the coming election must be held before the end of the first week of February 2027, as the 2013 document prescribes. So contrary to previous reports, the election cannot be lawfully delayed.
