Ireland was robbed in the quarters.
Bloody ref awarded Fiji a knock on try.
4 consecutive penalties by Fiji and ref again kept the cards in his pocket.
Feel sorry for the Irish team.
They played so well.
Play and win fair and square.
That’s true championship.
Not by aid of a extra man.
With sevens rugby gone into another level and high competition , so many other teams have caught up to fijian style.
Coaches have made plans how to beat Fiji
This may be the last medal Fiji has won in Olympics.
Man of the tournament is Dupont of France.
What a player.
Fiji have been dry of a win in last 2 years.
Where from here?
Indeed. They were so impressive against Australia in the semis. But France figured out how to overcome Fiji’s weaknesses. It had to rely on the biggest guns like Dupont to pull this off. Great run nonetheless and something we should all be proud of. A big salute to the boys. Vinaka Viti.
The Fiji 7s team has always been punching far above its weight. And yes, the stupid & idiot Fijians have been doing the heavy lifting for so long.
Be constructive volunteer to join the extended 7S PROGRAM next year. Go on one of their training runs at the Sigatoka sand dunes.
I am proud of our boys. And proud to be Fijian too.
Your comments are insensitive and grossly disrespectful. So much venom – you have nothing constructive to say. And we are all labelled stupid & idiots. You hide behind a pseudonym.
Graham bula vinaka can you please kindly admonish SLACKER to be respectful. I for one take exception to disparaging remarks against Fijians. And this is not the first time. Can SLACKERS identity be revealed please. So that we may test his superior intelligence, peerless rugby pedigree and out of this world DNA.
Jope, “Slacker” is anonymous. Maybe he or she is just upset about the loss and is kicking the cat. As you say, to work as hard as they have and make it to the final is still deserving of our respect. So they are the second best in the world after two Olympics in which they were the best. They are still world class and have brought great credit to Fiji.
Are you upset because the team you viewed so highly didn’t win gold? Every time Fiji loses to a team in sevens and fifteens rugby, the know-it-all Fijians getting upset brings a smile to my face. I’m glad Fiji lost. They deserved to lose. The Fiji sevens team have too much pride in them.
The Fiji sevens certainly tried hard, they intently looked up into the Sky and pointing, wonder pointing to whom ? Their God decided not to listen, as He/ She hasn’t for the past 2 years, maybe more praying, or maybe it’s the fault of other Races not praying hard enough ? You’ve gotta blame someone as always My Friend !
Perhaps they did not pray hard enough? Their prayers did not reach the right place as it seems to have been drowned out by the cheering French crowd.
Or maybe prayers just are not relevant.
With a tropical climate Fiji should have the ability to compete in other sports, such as rowing, swimming etc. But they put all their eggs in one basket. It will be a while before Fiji wins the 7’s back.
Very proud of the achievement, but it always will remain a mystery what Gollings would’ve achieved. The team was second best by not a big distance through the series when the ‘Stonewriters’-influenced/backed coup at Rugby House took place.
Osea brings in the old heads but also coach Gareth as a technical advisor and a couple of Drua engines (who were exceptional) to assist in Paris. The true legacy of Osea as a coach will now be seen when the dust settles and the old heads need to be moved out of the team for the new series.
I wish him well but appears that the writing is on the wall. It will be a miracle if Osea makes it to the end of the 2024-25 7s series. Feels like Ben G will have the last laugh.
Yes, as you say, we will never know. But let’s hope there’s a period of self reflection arising from this.
1/ Choosing a coach on the basis of ethnicity rather than merit is a fast-track to defeat. In rugby as well as everything else.
2/ God is not a Fijian. He/ she is also French. She is also not exclusively Christian because, for instance, Muslims worship the same God but with different prophets – Jesus for Christians and Mohammed for Muslims. So “Jisu” is only one member of “Team God”.
As with most international competition, this was a secular setting attended by people of all faiths. So perhaps we could do away with the pointing to the heavens after every try and marking the try line with the ball in the figure of a cross. There is a time and place for everything and such observances before a global television audience, most of which isn’t Christian, is not the time or place.
It speaks of religious fanaticism and the notion that Christians are superior to everyone else. And the one God for all just gave us a lesson on what she thinks about that.
I see you GD. But let them do whatever (is legal) on the ground. Religion has a placebo effect and if it does give the players that extra belief, so be it.
Nonetheless, spending extra time on lotu versus using the same time on last-minute tactics may be something for the team management to consider. The person who tries to enforce secularism will quickly be left with no job at all-maybe in Fiji, forever, under the rule of the fanatics in the regime!!
The finger pointing to the sky, the dancing in the aisle, the loud crying and speaking in tongues etc reflects the influence of Pentecostalism. Rugby is a secular sport. Lets keep it that way.
The reliance on rugby and God is mindboggling to say the least.
Wonder why Fiji still can’t produce world class swimmer’s, runner’s, shot putters, discus throwers, high jumper’s, long jumper’s etc. With such able bodied and fit youth. Could be their diet??
Smaller island nation’s in the Caribbean do so..even if rugby is not their main sport but they excel in other sport’s.
Rugby in Fiji is politics, religion and racism…and God is intoned every effing time in every effng aspect of life..be it by way of Christian “blessing’s” commiting a robbery, and assaulting other’s for example.
A colonial hangover of vanua, lotu and qito (rugby) ingrained in the psyche of people still, while other sports are ignored when there is so much talent and potential for Fiji to excel in sports other than just effing rugby!!
How many schools in Fiji has all basic sporting facilities.
Just a uneven ground to run.
How many has swimming pools?
Last government couldn’t even make a decent pool which from 2 million budget shot up to 12 million and is still under construction.
Fiji needs to wake up to produce good athletes.
Too much talk but no action by successive government including current.
Chairwoman - the great council of Vulagi chiefssays
From the very little I know of rugby rules, it appeared Fiji was on the defensive in the second half and kept on getting penalties. Maybe Frances game plan to bring this on, as well as the 70000 plus spectators giving France an edge just like Drua play a different level in Fiji hosted games.
Silver is great and they should be proud. The standards at the olympics are so high and there is hardly any gap between the top 3.
I would encourage the rugby fraternity to do more for the women’s rugby sevens as well. Olympic medal prospects only possibly exist in rugby sevens and the horror stories you hear about the way players are treated isn’t the way to look after the players welfare who bring back so much glory that cannot at this time be achieved in another sport.
By the way the pathetic so called lawyer hiding away in the south Auckland squatter settlement of Takanini abused rugby sevens code, coaches, players and administrators all year long predicting total failure for Fiji in the Olympics. As wrong as he is in his right to be abusive to the people of Fiji, he was always wrong about his sevens rugby predictions. Failure comes from burying your head in the mud and thinking you are right about everything. Rugby sevens is succeeding, while some who wish ill are failing.
It is not what 99 percent of Fijian fans wanted but something is better than none.
It is good for Drua boys to earn some extra allowance and sevens exposure.
Those overseas based players too will head back and join their clubs.
Their salary package is good and a bit of allowance as well.
Now what happens to rest of the boys.
Not all will join Drua or Fiji team.
Half of them will head back to their village or play for province if selected.
What is the financial gain for these half.
I would say just “Vinaka na qito ” is the pay.
Fans get disappointed but how many of them realize what is after this .
Players get injured ,thier body cannot do anymore or retire.
Few may also comeback for sevens series next year.
What is the money they get compared to other “big” teams.
Sevens is so intense these days.
If one gets injured than where do you get financial help for Fijian players.
None of these crazy Fijian fans may have any idea.
The psychology is to win at any cost or you are the bad guys.
Public needs to grow and accept win and loss.
FRU need to come out clean on these matters as well.
Sevens is a good marketing tool for Fiji.
How much support is from tourism industry for these players.
There is no control on apparel.
Any Tom,Dick and Harry can print and sell replicas.
Where is FRU on this issue.
There need to be strict control on exclusive license and copy rights.
Money earned should go towards players and their welfare.
Much needed to be done than just fly a blue flag or wear a Fiji rugby jersey and “kaila”toso viti.
Sending 20 official for 12 players including some high profile cheer personalities.
Toso Viti but where?
This loss should be a wake up call to the fat cats at FRU. They tried a band aid solution and it didn’t work.
Start building now for the next olympics and hire a good coach and stick with him.
Brother Annoying!
Do you know how much does these girls are payed?.
Do they have same facilities and care as other teams.?
If you pay peanuts you will get monkeys .
They doing well of what is available.
If women’s sport needs to grow in Fiji than all these sporting bodies need a wholesale change and funds need to pour in.
It is not just the money, it is all in the mindset. Too much reliance on God and prayers and fasting and faith. It is not just money, it is all in the upbringing and the programming of the mind from the day the are born. It is all wrong, the passion and understanding of a vulagi religion. It is all fake. Someone has to point it out.
This 7s final was different from the previous two Gold winning venues.
Rio and Tokyo vs Gt Britain in a neutral venue.
This final was in the lion’s den in Paris, not the same as playing on neutral ground against the mighty French. However the players alone would know if home ground advantage is for real. The fans can only speculate from the results we see.
Many a generation of All Black fans do not know of a defeat to anyone at Eden Park in Auckland! There is the Halley’s Comet type event though when the French did beat the AB’s at Eden Park in 1994. Respect to the people of whom Napoleon was once a mighty leader. Dupont showed his class, determination and pedigree, especially as he went around Tuwai on the left wing at a critical point in the final, the resulting try which saw the French on the front foot for the rest of the game.
The silver medal is a great achievement by Fiji, especially on the track record of the previous couple of years of disappointment at the semi finals and finals stage.
Now not only the Coach and Management need to do post match analysis to improve for the rest of the 7s season but the Talatalas need to account how the exclusivity of Devine favour of Gold was not achieved this time in this Crusade. Perhaps its a reminder that the sun shines and the rain falls on all – there are no favorites.
Ex-USP sociologist, the late Dr Simione Durutalo, argued the 5 Rs of Fijian lifestyle along the lines of Ratuism, Royalism, Religion, Rugby and Racism. Food for thought!
Congratulations to the team and management, especially the now retired 7s legend, Jerry Tuwai.
The stupid Fijians thought that they could win a gold medal in rugby sevens at the Olympics again. Idiots.
They got pretty close. There is no shame in silver.
Ireland was robbed in the quarters.
Bloody ref awarded Fiji a knock on try.
4 consecutive penalties by Fiji and ref again kept the cards in his pocket.

@rotfi, Gollings is no mystery, with the worst 7s series performance ever it was right of the FRU to show him the door.
Do more Hakka Fijian style then pray, that’s what the world wants to see.
The reliance on rugby and God is mindboggling to say the least.

What are you talking about? A silver medal is amazing, especially as it is an Olympic medal. Have you personally completed in any games?
It is really hard to get ahead of the same number of motivated opposing players, not just once but several times in one games.
and a lazy performance from fijiana 7s against China this morning.

Goodbye Fiji
The Silver is commendable. What about the Women’s team! They lost all their games. Losing to the likes of China and Brazil.
What excuse do they have. You can’t even say that they tried
