# HOMER IS LOOKING FOR SYMPATHY. IT’S BETWEEN SH*T AND SYPHILIS IN THE SHORTER OXFORD DICTIONARY

Posted on August 14, 2026 Leave a Comment

Charlie Charters seems to think that his praise for the Coalition government on social media entitles him to special treatment and certainly not to have his phone seized again by the police after he won his court case against FICAC.

Grubsheet doesn’t know enough to make any credible pronouncement on the case. But our local “Homer in a Muumuu” is in la-la land if he thinks his services to the government are going to help him.

Nor is he likely to benefit in the court of public opinion from a statement that reeks of self-entitlement and self-delusion:

Woo-hoo! So does this mean that Charlie is going to break ranks with his gaggle of fellow government worshipers and break ranks with the Coalition? Old Rolex Rambo will be quaking in his sandals.

Charlie describes himself as a “citizen journalist”. But what journalist goes to “great pains to give credit” to any government in the expectation of special treatment when they fall foul of the law?

With his international media experience, Charlie should be the first to understand that the executive – the government – normally has no say in what happens in the criminal justice system. Or is this Charlie telling us that in Fiji, things are different? Because this very much suggests that Charlie believes the government can put an end to his misery. And we thought they were independent. Silly us.

Poor Charlie. The Fiji Times accompanies its website coverage of his statement with multiple ads for “losing a hanging belly”. Surely they could have been placed somewhere else? Or is some wag at the FT deliberately trawling for sniggers?

With this statement, Charlie is clearly looking for sympathy. Alas, as the renowned British theatre critic, Ken Tynan, once said: “It’s in the Shorter Oxford Dictionary somewhere between sh*t and syphilis”.

In other words, you won’t get any here.

Media freedom, my arse.

About Grubsheet

Graham Davis
Grubsheet Feejee is the blogsite of Graham Davis, an award-winning journalist turned communications consultant who was the Fijian Government’s principal communications advisor for six years from 2012 to 2018 and continued to work on Fiji’s global climate and oceans campaign up until the end of the decade.

Fiji-born to missionary parents and a dual Fijian-Australian national, Graham spent four decades in the international media before returning to Fiji to work full time in 2012. He reported from many parts of the world for the BBC, ABC, SBS, the Nine and Seven Networks and Sky News and wrote for a range of newspapers and magazines in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

Graham launched Grubsheet Feejee in 2011 and suspended writing for it after the Fijian election of 2014, by which time he was working at the heart of government. But the website continued to attract hits as a background resource on events in Fiji in the transition back to parliamentary democracy.

Grubsheet relaunches in 2020 at one of the most critical times in Fijian history, with the nation reeling from the Covid-19 crisis and Frank Bainimarama’s government shouldering the twin burdens of incumbency and economic disintegration.

Grubsheet’s sole agenda is the national interest; the strengthening of Fiji’s ties with the democracies; upholding equal rights for all citizens; government that is genuinely transparent and free of corruption and nepotism; and upholding Fiji’s service to the world in climate and oceans advocacy and UN Peacekeeping.
