The Prime Minister is displaying all the callous indifference of the US President in playing down the seriousness of the drought that is fast becoming a national emergency. And fast becoming a huge political liability for a government that, like Donald Trump, has lost the plot.
Sitiveni Rabuka is now in the firing line of both the formal Opposition leader, Inia Seruiratu, and the informal opposition leader outside the parliament, Labour’s Mahendra Chaudhry. Both are making capital out of the fact that the PM is obsessed with fast-tracking his precious new constitution while ordinary Fijians are having to cope without the most basic necessity to sustain life. Water.
If Rabuka hasn’t absorbed the lessons of Donald Trump’s folly in turning a blind eye to the plight of ordinary people while he pursues his own bizarre obsessions like a ballroom or triumphal arch, there’s no helping him.
The People’s Alliance is increasingly looking like a one-issue party – a new constitution above all else. And any political observer with an ounce of strategic awareness can almost hear the public stampede away from the PAP with the general election now just a matter of weeks away.
Rabuka had better get a grip and quickly. The recent Centre for Democracy and Dialogue poll of Fijian public opinion had the constitution at number 10 on the list of the priorities of those who the People’s Alliance must win over if it is to retain government. In other words, they just don’t care.
What they care about is precisely what the American people care about and has seen the Republican Party decimated in the mid-term elections in the US – cost of living pressures. And they sure as hell care about proper access to water, especially when this government has given the billionaire owners of Fiji Water a corporate tax holiday as they ship water out of the country to the rest of the world.
Rolex Rambo is coming over just like Donald Trump – so disconnected from the lives of ordinary people that he may as well be living on another planet. Never mind fast-tracking the constitution. The Prime Minister had better fast-track an adequate response to the current water shortages caused by the drought or he and his government are toast.

A few simple truths be told…..The 1997 Constitution changed. This is the reason why you are where you are now with the the pending referendum. All the noise points to a revised constitution and a re visit to that document. Whether you like it or not the reality of social anthropological norms will determine this outcome. The Brits saw this very early in the piece. Subsequently a nation was formed based on those findings. Negative sentiment aside it was the correct decision as it recognized something very few would understand. Judging by the comments in most of these threads I wouldn’t expect most of you to understand that. Point is this…When you go against the grain you only make it worse. It doesn’t matter how unfair you think it is or what your utopian outlook on society is. Simple truths don’t lie! It’s time you get used to that idea . Don’t fight it or complain about it just accept it and live with it!
Fiji will be run by the I Taukei from now on and forever… If you don’t like it then you should head for the exit!
Yes, thank you for that. Very illuminating. It doesn’t matter if the iTaukei run the place badly, that’s their business. Is that how the rest of the narrative goes?
Unfortunately for the nation’s future, a large number of iTaukei are heading for the exits. What is your response to that?
This is an article about the need for the Great iTaukei Helmsman to stop obsessing about a new constitution and start doing a lot more to meet the needs of ordinary people. But you don’t even bother to acknowledge that.
Yes simple truths don’t lie. The iTaukei can’t look after themselves. They are a beggar nation totally dependent on foreign aid, foreign loans, remittances from their kai vata overseas and the jobs created for them by the “vulagi” Yet we still have to put up with chauvinistic nonsense like this.
Yes, much better to head for the exit. And guess what? That’s what people are doing, even the more enterprising iTaukei. Because your idea of the future isn’t remotely attractive even to your own people.
Can’t run a BBQ stall, they want to run the Country. lol
