On the old adage that if you don’t have anything nice to say about someone, you should say nothing, Grubsheet has been tempted to ignore the death of the Qaranivalu and Paramount Chief of Naitasiri, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata. Because I don’t have anything nice to say about him and personally believe the nation is better off for his passing. Yet ignoring it isn’t an option if the truth is to be served with any credibility.
As the most hardcore of indigenous extremists, the Qaranivalu has had a poisonous influence on national life and been an unmitigated disaster for race relations in particular. Instead of using his position to enlighten his subjects, he preyed on the fears of uneducated iTaukei that their way of life is somehow threatened when it has never been threatened except perhaps by their own self-entitled elite. And for that alone, Ratu Inoke doesn’t deserve to be remembered fondly.
Of course, one cannot say “good riddance” without causing grave offence in a country like Fiji where the chiefs still occupy a pedestal and the convention of not speaking ill of the dead extends to even the biggest national rogues. So let’s just say Ratu Inoke will be mourned only by his own people and not by anyone who values national unity, stability, democracy and the rule of law.
He spent a great deal of his life in prison for instigating the mutiny in the RFMF in 2000 which had it succeeded, would have been an unmitigated disaster for Fiji. The Qaranivalu had the blood on his hands of the three innocent troops who were murdered in cold blood and the four mutineers subsequently beaten to death who were foolish enough to go along with his fiendish plot to take control of the country. And for that he enters Fijian history with the blackest of records.
Yet even his years behind bars taught him nothing. Indeed he emerged from prison in 2023 publicly expressing the view – when the Great Council of Chiefs reconvened last year – that the chiefs should call the shots in Fiji, not the parliament. And that hereditary privilege should take precedence over democracy, with our elected representatives reduced to taking instructions from the GCC.
As usual, we must brace ourselves for a whole lot of cant as the nation’s leaders praise the Qaranivalu for his leadership of the people of Naitasiri, if nothing else. And especially the Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, who still has questions to answer about his own role in the mutiny of 2000, when he appeared at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua with his old military uniform in the back of his vehicle. (see our detailed article below)
The then military commander, Frank Bainimarama – who only just escaped with his life – has certainly always believed that Rabuka and the Qaranivalu were in league and that when the mutiny failed, Rabuka was lucky not to have been executed on the spot. Will we hear any of this in the public tributes to Ratu Inoke? Only when flying pigs are spotted over Suva.
Chiefly protocol dictates that the nation’s leaders will duly turn up to farewell the Qaranivalu but let’s not pretend that there is wider cause to mourn him. He is one of the reasons why Fiji’s promise at Independence to be a thriving, successful multiracial powerhouse has been squandered and that is a legacy that doesn’t deserve to be celebrated and is best forgotten.

UPDATE WED PM:
More detail from Fiji Live….

Some of our previous stories on the Qaranivalu. You can type his name into the search engine on the right for more.

Fiji has to move away from the tribal and hereditary class and political value system to succeed. There are far too many Ratus, tribal politics, the GCC members sitting on the pedestal and enjoying all kinds of favouritism compared to the ethnic minorities who are treated as second class citizens. This imbalance of power hierarchy and structure between the have’s and the have not’s are expected to get worse unless there is a REVOLUTION.
Yup, Fiji is ripe for a revolution!
Isn’t time all powerful and just.
Time has and time will take care of everything.
This man destroyed so many futures including my family. He deserves no respect for what he did to the living and the dead, Rajen Chaudhry suffered drastically inside parliament in 2000 under his instructions. He came from the jungle, deserves to be buried and forgotten in the jungle – would normally say thoughts with his family but unfortunately they supported him too. Let’s hope he doesn’t get a shock if hell’s gatekeeper is a Fiji Indian.
The humiliation bestowed on Rajendra Chaudhry involved, allegedly, a certain orifice. Perhaps deservedly!
Can everyone pls shut the f*** up if you have nothing good to say. You’ve seen the bad side of things, what about the good he has done. Countless to say.
He can just F-off.
And may he burn in hell for eternity. Next on the list, the pedo President. He is also dying a slow painful death I think.
Hopefully the rest of the people involved in 2000 and now walking the streets suffer the same painful and slow demise. They deserve it.
Where is that traitor Indian, Rajesh Singh? He called the Qaranivalu his chief, sometimes “my father”. That uneducated former SDL minister returned from hiding after Frank left, supporting his chief after the presidential pardon – who is going to protect him now – no empathy, sympathy or compassion for the death of this awful man or his mourning supporters ( make sure you shave your hair off Rajesh and mourn for 13 days ). This chief tried to burn Suva down, divided a nation and destroyed many lives.
The traitor freedumb fighter dunderhead mentioned is in Suva wondering around in his own irrelevance.
May even be dreaming of being installed as the big thief/chief to replace the dead “father.”
Once a skunk always a skunk.
You sometimes have to call a spade, a spade! Kudos to Grubsheet for saying it like it is.
Having observed and somewhat being active in Fiji politics for over 20 years, I couldn’t have summed up the chequered life of this man any better.
RIP RIT, democracy and the forces of unity – not division are rejoicing with your departure.
More waste of Tax payer $$$ coming up for his prolonged funeral- Biman will be sweating, teachers better get ready for further delayed payment and PooPoo Parkinson’s cheque book lap dog journalist VJ will be gearing up to do a timely tribute to this god sent chief.
Maybe Lynda can do a funeral video ( Aseri can help as it’s for his chief) , Rabuka can shed crocodile tears to farewell his 2000 buddy, Manoa can give a slow corporate funeral speech, Pupu William can do a paid tribute story, Pramesh Sharma can arrange the funeral at discounted 18% cut, Himmat Lodhia can provide Gold Rolex for the deceased, Richard Naidu can facilitate the will ( in lure of land deal for fiji water), Biman can hold civil service pay for the next month to pay for the political circus around the funeral, Gavoka can charter Fiji Airways for overseas funeral attendees, Charan Jaat Singh can sponsor free whiskey for the mourning period, Army commander can do another forgiveness session with more tax payer $$, Sashi can cry on National TV and Pio can extend his trip for another 42 days to mourn with his military buddies … please feel to allocate others with funeral responsibilities.
While flying pigs aren’t going to spotted over Suva, we take solace in dying pigs.
The people of Muaniveni farming cummunity and dairy farmers in Tailevu will long remember this, this….person as his goons terrorized, raped, and pillaged, causing unspeakable horrific scars that will never be forgotten.
It is something to be so reviled in life for causing irreparable inter-racial harm.
That any person could be still remembered as an extreme evil force in death is sad in itself. That the deceased has so many rabid followers makes it even more tragic.
To paraphrase “I have the means,” but there we have it
Another one at the presidential palace. His face etched in agony but he will not admit. Rabuka looking ill putting on a facade in front of the public. Wonder if they will meet their naita, mataqali when they arrive at the gates of wherever above. Wonder if they will be given a special place.
Meanwhile Pio justifying his trip barking like a rabid dog and that he doesn’t give a darn about a political party’s statement, saying that they were part of a coup. Wasn’t he part of the same in 1987.
A lot of supporters saying Isa, good job naita etc. How many ordinary people will ever sit on a plane to go to the countries he is visiting. And the trip to Jerusalem by the elite. Very quiet. Have they paid the outstanding. It’s easter now so pay up you rascals.
A great article written by Nirmal Cheema on emotions and how it is manipulated.
It’s becoming harder every day to be able to even breathe.
I can’t access Nirmal’s article because of my Facebook ban. Can you please copy and paste it here?
/Wasn’t he part of the same in 1987./
Big time benefactor in all coups. In 2006 he was king until they kick his ass. But good golly did he milk it in 2006.
And Pio participated actively with others in 2000 as well who are now lording it over the poor with bling, gold watches and 42 days travel!
Forty-two days!
Flying business class anll the way and back, raking in $100, 000+ in per diem and miscellaneous allowances, 5-star meals, 5-star hotels, tailored suits and boots.
While 60% of people chow noodles.
Pio is just making hay while the sun shines.
Making sure his bank balance is 7 figures by 2026…all while and yes rightly said, 60% Fijians chow noodles.
As for this scumbag, hope he rots in hell.
Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart song comes to mind-
People Get Ready — in part:
People get ready
There’s a train a-coming
You don’t need no baggage
You just get on board
All you need is faith
To hear the diesels humming
Don’t need no ticket
You just thank the Lord
People get ready
For the train to Jordan
Picking up passengers
From coast to coast
Faith is the key
Open the doors and board them
There’s room for all
Among the loved the most
There ain’t no room
For the hopeless sinner
Who would hurt all mankind just
To save his own
Have pity on those
Whose chances are thinner
Cause there’s no hiding place
From the Kingdom’s Throne
So people get ready
For the train a-comin’
You don’t need no baggage
You just get on board!
All you need is faith
To hear the diesels humming
Don’t need no ticket
You just thank, you just thank the Lord
No amount of prayer will save this one from hell.
To be cooked in the fires of hell for eternity.
Wonder what all those who were held hostage in Parliament House in 2000 think.
One thing is for sure, Fiji will be much better without the likes of him.
Hopefully they do waste too much money and time for his funeral. He was a waste time falla.
Nirmal Singh Cheema article
You see, we are very emotional society. Lot of decisions we make are based on emotions rather than reasoning, logic and reality. Some are emotional because their forefathers came from india and toiled the soil and naturally expect us to be the children of this land. Indigenous people are emotional because they are the first people of the land and this is their vanua. They are emotional towards their culture and traditions. Some are emotional because of their personal and professional association and some are emotional because of their affiliations to a political party. Yesterday when I called out on the minister for his 42 days of travel abroad he responded with emotion that was dictated by his affiliation with the institution he once served. Being a emotional society is what makes us the people of Fiji unique. But the problem arises when the emotions supercedes the interest of the country. The 1987, 2000 and 2006 coup was result of politicians playing on the emotions of our people which caused havoc in our country. The problem begins when we incite our peoples emotions to justify our actions. For example if there was a bi election and Minister for Defense and I were the candidates and the election was based on the ministers 42 days trip and mine based on prudent use of taxpayers money and the need for the minister to travel abroad for 42 days, the minister would have won with landslide majority. This is how our elections have been played on for many years. Voting on emotions than reasons and reality. People didn’t care if there is poverty in the country, breakdown of law and order, serious drugs problems and general hardship they faced given current economic and financial situation of the country . Their support to the minister was the result of outpouring of emotions. And 2026 election will be no different. You go into election fanning the fire of emotions. Unless we start using our mind instead of heart we will go nowhere and continue to be stuck in the quicksand while the rest of the world which march on. We must think of our country and posterity before we allow emotions to dictate our decisions. We must think of our family and their wellbeing first.
We must never allow emotions to overshadow the reality and what is best for our country. We must stand up and demand transparency, accountability and good governance based on principles rather than emotions.
(By the way, Lt Col. Pio and I are very close friends and he knows both of us have very strong links with our military. I have always addressed him on his military ranking than as a minister. This is nothing personal or political and the Minister knows this)
I think the words emotional and emotion can be replaced with racists and racism. That is the reality. Nothing in Fiji has to do with emotions.
The vast majority of Fijians are first rate racist Christians. Very pretentious.
But then, we also have dickheads like Baimaan, Sashi, Charan and Dick Naidu. And many others. Should I mention the NGOs, the womens organisations and the judiciary. Like I keep saying, there are idiots everywhere in Fiji.
Pio was a soldier who, following the 2006 coup, chose to cash in his chips with Frank because of the obvious material benefits that would come his way. He saw the opportunity and took it.
The ethics of joining the coupmakers in 2006 did not bother him. It was self first. Thus he became an accomplice after the fact of the 2006 coup.
He says he is going to ‘stand shoulder to shoulder’ with our soldiers in the Middle East. Strange, as he is a politician. And we have seen how Fiji has been screwed by politicians uing the military to promote their own personal agenda.
And thats the problem with Fiji politics; the problem of politicians wannbe soldiers, and soldiers wannabe politcians.
No wonder the country is f**ed !
Pio is a self-serving person whose time is coming. If he really wants to masi polo the soldiers overseas on his 42 day junket, I challenge him to forgo his allowances including meals and entertainment. Also fly economy class and live in a motel since you are traveling by yourself. Be an honest and humble politician, don’t hide behind a crap prepared press release ( by Richard Naidu) and think you doing the taxpayer a favour. We not all stupid like your govt and party. Only PooPoo Willam CFL will believe your crap and give your BS statement oxygen because your leader gave them a cheque. Don’t blame the previous govt, Get your head out of your ass Pio and smell the real poopoo against your travel.
Burn in hell for what you have done to fiji and Fijians – Rabuka must be poopooing himself – karma is coming for 2000 perpetrators – Lucifer is calling and going to church on sundays won’t help.
Pio has leaned all his life at the government trough, feasting and living the life with a straight face.
Lucifer has been life long friends with these ethno-nationalists, greeting them every Sunday and preaches to them in churches!
They are just called talatala.
The devil is in the talatala’s messages from the pulpit.
As an aside, perhaps the vanua will consider the ex-NZ freedumb “fighters” now wandering the streets of Suva to be pall bearers.
I feel extremely sorry for all the poor cattle and pigs that will be killed to farewell this subhuman lowlife. All the lowdown scum of the Earth will be at his funeral to feed their faces on these animals who will be killed to farewell an Adolf Hitler reincarnate.
While I sympathise with the family, having lost a father and a husband, I think we can agree, the world has become a slightly safer place with the passing of this man.
A chief leads his/her people fairly and without prejudice. He/she does not use race, politics and hate as their cornerstone for leadership.
Inoke Takiveikata was a man who used all three for her personal gain and to create division between Fijians and Indians. He used politics to sow the seeds of national disunity and under the guise of his so-called chiefly title, his actions and words resulted in the death of many people.
“The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones.”
― William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar
Our world does not need a despot such as Takiveikata in this modern day where misinformation and hate is rife throughout the world. He has revelled in sowing and adding to the hate and misinformation. His death should be a signal to those in Fiji, particularly Rabuka & Co. that their time on this planet is quickly drawing to a close as well. How will they be remembered?
Evil men are not remembered.
Nor are evil men forgotten.
If that makes sense.
One thing is sure though, their descendants are forever cursed by little old ladies crying in anguish seeing their own daughters and daughters-in-law molested, humiliated and raped. Husbands sons, sons-in-law, and brothers beaten without mercy as whole families witnessed helpless.
Cattle limbs were slaughtered in front of them and in the fields. They all heard the animals left behind to die screaming in agony.
Human beings died. Policemen died shot in cold blood. Soldiers died shot in cold blood. More died in retributive ‘justice’ of live by the sword, die by the sword. Because of the evil of this one man.
The above should be a part of his eulogy.
I think it was the Christianity in them that required them to do that to their neighbours. You know “love thy neighbour” and all that. Except it was more like “hate thy neighbour”, except they were pretending until the right time.
Or maybe it was the kaisi bokola which overtook their mentality and they forgot the Christian teachings for convenience at the time.
Or maybe they just were always stupid.
There are logical explanations for everything.
But one thing is unquestionable, just like Hitler and Rabuka and the President, the Qaranivalu was a first class dickhead, and they all were and are respected by some quarters. I mean by more dickheads.
Those, like this excuse for a man, who supported the continuance of the antiquated Chiefly system will suffer the same fate.
The GCC members sitting on the pedestal and enjoying all kinds of favouritism have done nothing to improve the lives of Fijian people. They talk a lot but that is about it! They seek to take Fiji back to era of subversion, something that is no longer relevant or tolerated in the 21st Century.
Many will attend, not to mourn but to ensure he is dead and buried. The current Government will attend at some expensive cost and no doubt will pay for the funeral, whilst basic services continue to decay.
Celebration time!!!!
Let us REJOICE this MF death.
One less scumbag on earth.
This RAT will burn in HELL. And so will his supporters.
Thank you GOD!!!!!
I pray you have Rabuka next on your list.
Idiots at Rosi Doviverata’s Fiji Sun don’t even know what ‘alleged’ means.
Memo to Inoke Rabonu: if he was convicted and sentenced for the crime, then it is no longer alleged but proven beyond reasonable doubt.
Now it is the turn of the Commissioner of Police to have talanoa sessions with his officers around the country. I guess it is another way of having reconciliation sessions like the RFMF did. I wonder if apologies are involved. The people, the Army and Police of Fiji are so precious and special.
What I would like to know is when will they actually do any work of any substance, because a lot of time is spent on talanoa, reconciliation and going back to the past?
Fiji’s traditions and culture are unique. I know, the vulagi will never understand.
One spark and I am sure all the talanoa, reconciliation and everything else will go out the window very fast.
Maybe the GCC and the Provincial councils can come up with a scholarship system for the chiefs. Make them go up to postgraduate level and further in management. Send them abroad. Groom them since they are kids to grow up into statesmen. Similar to what Ratu Mara and Sukuna went through.
Once they get overseas exposure and mingle with modern minds, they will become better leaders and probably edcuate their subjects on how to be better Fijians.
It’s a shame the GCC and provincial councils are wasting millions of land revenue down the drain instead of building intellectual capacity.
There should be no sympathy for this evil swine. May he rot in hell all eternity and more, never finding peace.
All evil men will face this day and time will give all those suffered under them retribution. Rabuka will suffer even worse curses the day he hits the deck. There shall be celebrations in Fiji on that day.
Hell Bound.
Hope his death serves as an example to all so called Christians. If you follow Christ and sin on earth, you are destined for Hell on earth and afterlife.
While most Christ followers in Fiji are good people, a handful like Inoke and Rabuka are destined for Hell.
If this idiot’s funeral gets telecast on any national TV here in Fiji, it will be a slap to every Fijian.
God has started his clean up campaign. The younger populace want none of these stupid titles. Meaningless and hate-filled life.
Vinaka Kalou.
This man caused mayhem in Fiji during 2000 coup. Was the main instigator amongst others. Hated Indians who transformed Fiji into a vibrant economy to core. Used his chiefly status to mislead I taukei that Indians are threats to advance his interest. Served his sentence but still needs more punishment in hell. And God will ensure that.
I’m not a supporter of this man—far from it. I don’t share his ideology in the slightest. But I will say this: may God have mercy on his soul. For his sake, I hope that at some point he experienced his own road to Damascus and, in a moment of honesty, told the vanua of Naitasiri that he had been wrong all along—that we must truly learn to live together in peace and harmony.
I believe his actions were not solely the product of personal conviction, but were also shaped by the legacy of influential and “colorful” chiefs—figures who rose to prominence under colonial rule. These chiefs, handpicked and empowered by colonial authorities to ensure loyalty and maintain control, enjoyed privilege and success that often spanned generations. Sadly, those benefits rarely reached the very people they were meant to serve.
This photo of him is from his better days. I heard he had become skin and bones with barely enough strength to stand and talk in his final days.
He didn’t leave much on his body even for the bacteria and maggots. Hope he’s being dragged all the way to his fate in hell.
