# EDGE OF THE ABYSS

Posted on September 15, 2012 285 Comments

The controversial Dr Marc Edge – Head of the School of Journalism at the University of the South Pacific – clings to his job by his fingernails after his recent disastrous “Media and Democracy” conference that led to official protests and open conflict with his fellow academics. Grubsheet understands that the USP has triggered formal internal … [Read more...] about # EDGE OF THE ABYSS

# THE LEAP THAT INSPIRED A NATION

Posted on September 12, 2012 30 Comments

Just when the nation is looking for heroes, for a unifying force that’s above the political fray, one emerges. Just when we need it most, someone shows us that  disadvantage is no barrier to achieving success. Iliesa Delana isn’t exactly the hero from central casting. For a start, he has only one leg. But no-one who witnessed his arrival back in … [Read more...] about # THE LEAP THAT INSPIRED A NATION

# METHODIST CHURCH OF INTOLERANCE

Posted on September 10, 2012 132 Comments

Christian state: A country in which Christianity is declared the official religion. Secular state: A country in which there is a separation of church and state and no religion has more official status than any other: This is undoubtedly the toughest article I have ever written, and the saddest. Because I feel that it is my duty to … [Read more...] about # METHODIST CHURCH OF INTOLERANCE

# RUMBLINGS AT THE EDGEFEST

Posted on September 5, 2012 80 Comments

Journalists and media educators have descended on the University of the South Pacific in Suva this week for a conference on "Media and Democracy in the South Pacific". Not surprisingly, the topic and the timing of this talkfest have caused a high degree of consternation behind the scenes. It was the brainchild of Dr Marc Edge, the head of the USP's … [Read more...] about # RUMBLINGS AT THE EDGEFEST

# DECEPTION AND DELUSION

Posted on September 1, 2012 92 Comments

A lot of drums have been beaten in recent days at the Pacific Forum Leaders Summit in the Cooks Islands but none more hollow than that of the unholy alliance of Fiji's four main political parties. The SDL – the governing party deposed by Frank Bainimarama in 2006 – joined forces with the Fiji Labour Party, the National Federation Party and the … [Read more...] about # DECEPTION AND DELUSION

# FIJI LABOUR PARTY IMPLODES

Posted on August 29, 2012 34 Comments

One of the truisms of modern politics is that disunity is death. So it’s instructive that two years out from the scheduled return to democracy in Fiji, the forces ranged against the Bainimarama regime seem so determined to tear themselves apart. Hot on the heels of the SDL’s very public self-immolation with its call for a Christian state comes news … [Read more...] about # FIJI LABOUR PARTY IMPLODES

About Grubsheet

Graham Davis
Grubsheet Feejee is the blogsite of Graham Davis, an award-winning journalist turned communications consultant who was the Fijian Government’s principal communications advisor for six years from 2012 to 2018 and continued to work on Fiji’s global climate and oceans campaign up until the end of the decade.

Fiji-born to missionary parents and a dual Fijian-Australian national, Graham spent four decades in the international media before returning to Fiji to work full time in 2012. He reported from many parts of the world for the BBC, ABC, SBS, the Nine and Seven Networks and Sky News and wrote for a range of newspapers and magazines in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

Graham launched Grubsheet Feejee in 2011 and suspended writing for it after the Fijian election of 2014, by which time he was working at the heart of government. But the website continued to attract hits as a background resource on events in Fiji in the transition back to parliamentary democracy.

Grubsheet relaunches in 2020 at one of the most critical times in Fijian history, with the nation reeling from the Covid-19 crisis and Frank Bainimarama’s government shouldering the twin burdens of incumbency and economic disintegration.

Grubsheet’s sole agenda is the national interest; the strengthening of Fiji’s ties with the democracies; upholding equal rights for all citizens; government that is genuinely transparent and free of corruption and nepotism; and upholding Fiji’s service to the world in climate and oceans advocacy and UN Peacekeeping.
