# LOOK AT THE STATE OF THE FIJIAN MEDIA AND WEEP

Posted on January 5, 2025 65 Comments

22 months ago, Stanley Simpson - the doyen of Fijian journalism and Secretary General of the Fiji Media Association - made an astonishing spectacle on what was then Twitter and is now "X" of shedding tears of joy over the abolition of the FijiFirst government's media laws. It was meant to herald in a new era of media freedom and there were … [Read more...] about # LOOK AT THE STATE OF THE FIJIAN MEDIA AND WEEP

# THE VIRGIN RAPE AND BASHING. A SHOCKING ATTEMPT TO DECEIVE (UPDATED SUNDAY AM)

Posted on January 4, 2025 38 Comments

The charging of a Fijian man with one count of rape and one count of sexual assault puts an end to the pretence that the attacks on members of a visiting Virgin Airlines crew in Martintar on New Year's Eve were being sensationalised by the international media and weren't as serious as they were being depicted. There have been repeated attempts … [Read more...] about # THE VIRGIN RAPE AND BASHING. A SHOCKING ATTEMPT TO DECEIVE (UPDATED SUNDAY AM)

# BARBARA MALIMALI MUST BE STOOD DOWN IMMEDIATELY

Posted on January 4, 2025 20 Comments

There are a number of deeply troubling aspects about the announcement that the Commission of Inquiry into the allegedly "rotten" circumstances of Barbara Malimali's appointment as FICAC Commissioner begins its hearings on Monday with the Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, as the first witness. For a start, the inquiry is being held in secret. No … [Read more...] about # BARBARA MALIMALI MUST BE STOOD DOWN IMMEDIATELY

Mahendra "Mac" Motibhai Patel - the "Chairman Emeritus" of the company that owns the Fiji Times - is back for the New Year continuing to misuse the nation's traditional newspaper of record to push his personal and political agenda. In today's edition, the only man in Fijian history never to serve the jail sentence he was given for abuse of … [Read more...] about # THE OLD CROOK HAS GONE COMPLETELY BONKERS (UPDATED SUNDAY AM)

Within a month of castigating the international media for sensationalising the poisoning of guests at the Warwick Resort, the Minister for Tourism, "Blinky Bill" Gavoka, is at it again, warning them not to sensationalise the assault and rape of Virgin Airlines personnel visiting Nadi. # MEMO PM: IF YOU WANT A FUTURE IN POLITICS, YOU’D BETTER STOP PLAYING VICTIM AND LEAD

Posted on January 2, 2025 57 Comments

The Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, is on the front page of today's Fiji Sun with an astonishingly self-indulgent piece in which he ruminates about whether he will lead the People's Alliance into the next election. Self-indulgent because he is ultimately responsible for everything the Coalition touches turning to sh*t - whether it is the current … [Read more...] about # MEMO PM: IF YOU WANT A FUTURE IN POLITICS, YOU’D BETTER STOP PLAYING VICTIM AND LEAD

About Grubsheet

Graham Davis
Grubsheet Feejee is the blogsite of Graham Davis, an award-winning journalist turned communications consultant who was the Fijian Government’s principal communications advisor for six years from 2012 to 2018 and continued to work on Fiji’s global climate and oceans campaign up until the end of the decade.

Fiji-born to missionary parents and a dual Fijian-Australian national, Graham spent four decades in the international media before returning to Fiji to work full time in 2012. He reported from many parts of the world for the BBC, ABC, SBS, the Nine and Seven Networks and Sky News and wrote for a range of newspapers and magazines in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

Graham launched Grubsheet Feejee in 2011 and suspended writing for it after the Fijian election of 2014, by which time he was working at the heart of government. But the website continued to attract hits as a background resource on events in Fiji in the transition back to parliamentary democracy.

Grubsheet relaunches in 2020 at one of the most critical times in Fijian history, with the nation reeling from the Covid-19 crisis and Frank Bainimarama’s government shouldering the twin burdens of incumbency and economic disintegration.

Grubsheet’s sole agenda is the national interest; the strengthening of Fiji’s ties with the democracies; upholding equal rights for all citizens; government that is genuinely transparent and free of corruption and nepotism; and upholding Fiji’s service to the world in climate and oceans advocacy and UN Peacekeeping.
