#MULTI-FAITH: CORNERSTONE OF A NATION

Posted on October 11, 2020 19 Comments

The essential prerequisite for Fiji's success as a nation is to forge a consensus on the importance of respecting the underlying principle that we are a multi-cultural, multi-faith nation and the only possible way forward is to uphold that principle. All the upheavals of the past 50 years flow from this principle being challenged. They include all … [Read more...] about #MULTI-FAITH: CORNERSTONE OF A NATION

#”SORRY I CAN’T BE THERE BUT CONGRATULATIONS!”

Posted on October 10, 2020 3 Comments

The Prince of Wales has sent Fijians a video message expressing his regret that the Covid-19 pandemic prevented him from being in Suva today for the 50th anniversary Independence celebrations. 50 years to the day since he handed Fiji its instruments of Independence on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen, Prince Charles relives some of that experience … [Read more...] about #”SORRY I CAN’T BE THERE BUT CONGRATULATIONS!”

# MEMORIES OF FIJI DAY IN PICTURES

Posted on October 10, 2020 4 Comments

We all have our own memories of the celebrations for Fiji Day and mine are especially vivid in the years from 2012 to 2018 when I was working in Suva on the government's communications effort. Most of these photos I took are from Fiji Day, 2012, before the new stadium was built on the Thurston Gardens side of Albert Park and certainly before the … [Read more...] about # MEMORIES OF FIJI DAY IN PICTURES

#HAPPY 50TH INDEPENDENCE DAY!

Posted on October 10, 2020 5 Comments

At precisely 10.00am 50 years ago today, Fiji gained its independence from Britain when H.R.H the Prince of Wales handed our founding Prime Minister, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, the formal instruments of independence and the Fijian flag - our noble banner blue - was hoisted for the first time over Suva's Albert Park. It's hard to convey the sense … [Read more...] about #HAPPY 50TH INDEPENDENCE DAY!

#IT’S OUR FLAG, NOT THEIRS. DEFEND IT.

Posted on October 8, 2020 19 Comments

As the national flag – our “noble banner blue” – flies over the celebrations this weekend marking the 50th anniversary of Independence, it’s worth remembering just how close Frank Bainimarama and Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum came five years ago to getting rid of it altogether. Our cover photo is of one of the 23 designs that emerged … [Read more...] about #IT’S OUR FLAG, NOT THEIRS. DEFEND IT.

#SITIVENI RABUKA: THE FEAR FACTOR

Posted on October 6, 2020 6 Comments

“Disunity is death” is a truism in politics everywhere, as is another famous saying that “a party that can’t govern itself cannot govern the nation”. Yet it’s a clear sign of the decline of the ruling FijiFirst government that even a party as divided as the SODELPA opposition is now the preferred choice of the Fijian people to win the next election … [Read more...] about #SITIVENI RABUKA: THE FEAR FACTOR

About Grubsheet

Graham Davis
Grubsheet Feejee is the blogsite of Graham Davis, an award-winning journalist turned communications consultant who was the Fijian Government’s principal communications advisor for six years from 2012 to 2018 and continued to work on Fiji’s global climate and oceans campaign up until the end of the decade.

Fiji-born to missionary parents and a dual Fijian-Australian national, Graham spent four decades in the international media before returning to Fiji to work full time in 2012. He reported from many parts of the world for the BBC, ABC, SBS, the Nine and Seven Networks and Sky News and wrote for a range of newspapers and magazines in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

Graham launched Grubsheet Feejee in 2011 and suspended writing for it after the Fijian election of 2014, by which time he was working at the heart of government. But the website continued to attract hits as a background resource on events in Fiji in the transition back to parliamentary democracy.

Grubsheet relaunches in 2020 at one of the most critical times in Fijian history, with the nation reeling from the Covid-19 crisis and Frank Bainimarama’s government shouldering the twin burdens of incumbency and economic disintegration.

Grubsheet’s sole agenda is the national interest; the strengthening of Fiji’s ties with the democracies; upholding equal rights for all citizens; government that is genuinely transparent and free of corruption and nepotism; and upholding Fiji’s service to the world in climate and oceans advocacy and UN Peacekeeping.
